What is the preview directX 10 switch supposed to do? When I check the box all my plane's skins go blank.

FSX was designed around DX9, MS started playing around with DX10 as they new it could improve things, but they never finished it. To use the DX10 preview you need a dx10 compliant video card, which you must have or you wouldnt have the option, its also a good idea to download teh latest dx10 files. MS have a web based dx updater, just down load it and it will update any missing files. Of course this requires win7 or 8. Some people have issues with DX10 others not. There are some freeware files avaliable on AVSIm that can improve the experience. but it means you need to read before you try. There is also a payware DX10 fixer which works really well, makes FSX into a different sim, even has VC shadows if enabled in model.

Clicking DX10 preview has caused me nothing but trouble in the past......better off left alone in my opinion.
Also Light bloom is a performance killer. I use ENB Bloom instead.
