FSX and directx

I've searched the net far and (maybe not so wide) to find and answer to this...maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
I've noted in downloading aircraft that often, there is a note that indicates a model is suitable for directx10 etc. My OS is Win 8.1 (I'd gladly trade to XP or even 7, but that's another story) Is there any way to configure an aircraft that has been designed for directx9 to allow it to work properly with directX10? I'm not a programmer, so please go easy on me. I'll gladly do the work, as long as I have some place to reference information. Thanks and many blue skies to you all...

the main difference between dx9 and 10 is shader 4.0 support. (shadows and lighting)
"SteveFX DX10 Scenery Fixer" will allow you to run non dx10 (legacy) aircraft and scenery in fsx.
it's a must have for running fsx in dx10 preview mode with good results.
the freeware version has issues with night lighting in orbx scenery so get the payware version if you use orbx products.

Thank you for the information. I'll give it a shot.
