When an aircraft cfg file is altered (using Notepad in Windows 7), for whatever purpose, the attempt to save the altered file brings brings the error message "Access Denied." Can anyone suggest a way around this - or are the FSX files locked in some way? Many thanks for any clues...

Drag the Notepad file from its location and drop it onto the Desktop....

Perform the alteration...

Save it....

Drag it back into its previous location again!

Sorted!

Paul.... :D ...!

I have always found that after dragging it to desktop, that altering the CFG works well in the standard "Windows Notepad" .....then just drag the file back into FSX

Weird, I don't have to do any of that I can Edit a CFG File from right within the aircraft folder itself and SAVE it , without any problem.

must be something a user has to click somewhere or something so that a user doen't have to drag the CFG file to the desk top everytime. / ????????????

I found this happens most often when you try to alter the CFG when the aircraft file is still in a compressed or zipped form. Once you decompress it there isn't any problem modifying the CFG.

 DON'T FORGET TO SAVE A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL SOMEWHERE SAFE BEFORE YOU EDIT IT!! (yes I'm shouting...)

If you don't you might be all  , and you will  that someone here can help, but we'll all be like :naughty: , we told you so, and if you edit things without being careful and mess up your FSX...well... :violin:

I'm guessing FSX is installed in it's default location C\Program Files (x86).... If so, you need to make sure you are logged in or registered as "Administrator", or, as Fozzer said, copy or move the aircraft.cfg to your desktop and open and edit with Notebook, then save the changes and copy and past back into the aircraft's folder.

I would use the "copy/paste" and rename the original in the folder, so when you paste the edited file back in, it will not over-write your original aircraft.cfg.

The security permissions of Vista, Win7, and Win8 prevents editing (unless you are the administrator.) This is also why most advise installing directly on the C drive, instead of the default location.

Ya know I forgot about that - your correct too !!!

Don't try to Edit a CFG File while its still in a Compressed ZIP FILE , or the Folder is still in a compressed Zipped file

Transfer / Copy & Paste the entire Aircraft Folder OUT of the Zipped Folder to another area, I use my Pictures area, that I have created Sub Folders in, to put Aircraft in that I need to edit.

I often find that even though I am listed as having full Administrator Rights/Permission to edit files on my computer, (all the boxes ticked in Windows 7/8), I still have to drag some of them onto the desktop to be able to modify them!
Its all to do with the new, annoying "security issues" in Win 7 and 8; problems which did not occur in lovely-old Windows XP!... ;) ...!
Its one of those "problems" in Win 7/8 which can catch you out, until you get to know the cure!

I reckon, Windows XP is the cure!... ;) .... ...!

Paul...Win 8, 64 bit, and occasional problems!... ...!

I believe you can turn off User Account Control and Win 7 will act just like XP as far as that goes. Not sure, just remember reading about it a while back.

When I first ran into that problem I just changed the ownership & access rights at the folder level.

But SimAccess should work without the "hard" work, so to speak.
