Lack of airport activity

New user to FSX. Have used FS9 for some time.
I recently flew out of KDFW. Took off and ciscled the field and find only three commercial planes on the field and a half dozed G/A. In addition there was little or no ATC chatter. Also find that my frequent general aviation fields are basically bare. Only one building and tower.

Is this the norm with FSX. If so I may want to consider going back to FS9.

I thought FSX would be comparable.

Disapointed. !!

It is the same as in terms, what you put into the program, you get out of the program, same as FS9.
FS9 was not a plug play simulator, it took working your sliders and settings to get the desired results you wanted, with a favorable performance of the PC, with the quality display of the simulator. Finding the balance took practice of trial and error to get the results we were happy with.

FSX has numerous tweeks in the fsx.cfg that can be used, along with the slider adjustments in Settings/Customize found within the simulator itself.

You want more buildings and trees, and ground traffic as well as air traffic, that can be found in Settings/Customize under the Scenery and Traffic Tabs with in the simulator. There you will find sliders that increase or decrease the desired results you are looking for. Also understand maxing sliders may cause some systems to perform sluggish. Trial and error just how much is enough to the point of over kill. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

FSX is a software that has many faces, some users have large systems they have aquired, then there are others that still run with the minimum requirements on 15 year old systems running XP and AGP ports for their video card and have fantastic results. Every PC has a different sweet spot where FSX and performance are at it's optiminal and have the desired results you were looking for. It will not happen overnight. There are very compatable programs designed for FSX that work great, then there are others that don't play well with others. Research is the key.

Bottom line is there are many tutorials and posts made here at SimV that deal with what a person can do to FSX and maintain performance as well have a great looking FSX. I've purchased and flew the microsoft simulators starting with 2000 all the way to FSX and have enjoyed FSX as the best to be offered as what Microsoft Flight Simulator did for us true blue followers.

Thank you your reply.

I have worked some of sliders, but it seems I have to do much more research to optimize as I deem necessary.

So time for a little bit of home work.

Again thanks,

I have no clue as to setting up FS9 for best settings. But I do recall that it took quite a bit to understand FSX.

Now, it's no problem. The same will happen to you too.

Actually, after playing with FSX the first hour or two, I was ready to toss it.

I mean, I couldn't even land a stupid Cessna 172 on a major commercial jet runway! So you're way ahead of me.

Regarding AI activity in FSX. Its similar to FS 2004.
In the main start-up menu:

Settings > Display > Customise >

Traffic:
Airline.
General Aviation.
Airport vehicles.

Road vehicles.
Ships and Ferries.
Leisure boats.

All these can be varied to suit. Just remember that going daft with many of these Traffic settings will reduce your FSX to a shuddering crawl!
Gradually increase selected settings from zero, and then observe the (smooth?) running of the Sim, stage by stage.
Many of these setting will also affect the response from ATC (Air Traffic Control).

Paul....With minimum Traffic, for smooth running in FSX.... ;) ...!

FoMoCo and Fozzer is spot on!

If you run fsx acceleration you could try

www.venetubo.com/fsx.html
to maybe fix other things in your fsx.cfg regarding to your system. It will save your current .cfg, but no harm copying it and save it somewhere else.

FSX takes time to get it running decently. We all know that ;)

There is a GREAT write up on how to tweak your FSX and where to find it at the tippy top of the FSX forum page. I can't recall the author off the top of my head but he is a heck of a smart feller!! :D

In additition to tweaking and peaking the game it's self, there are a TON of add on AI aircraft and their associated flight plans etc, as well as scenery and so on both here and on Avsim's website. I am STILL working my way thru Avsim, I think I got most of what I wanted from this wonderfull site other than the fantastic company and companionship of the fellow simmers on the forums :D :D :text-thankyouyellow:

Good luck, happy hunting and may your simxperience be a great one!
