FSX Problem

Postby c130lover » Tue Oct 22, 2013 9:52 pm

Hello,

After about a year without doing a reinstall, FSX just decided to stop working out of the blue. I had absolutely no problems before. In fact, the night before, I was flying on Boston Virtual ATC servers. When I would press the fly now button the day after, it would appear to load normally, except I could see my desktop instead of the black background. After it loaded, I couldn't see anything except my desktop. Sound and everything was fine. I could even hear the rev of the engines as I pushed my throttle forwards. When I pressed escape, the end flight box, which normally appears in the center of my monitor and over a black background, still had the transparent background and showed up on the bottom right corner. When I clicked on end flight, It brought me to the normal looking free flight selection screen. All was normal, except the rotating 3d plane screen first appeared black, then was invisible. When I moused over my desktop through the previously 3d aircraft display, icons were even highlighted by my mouse pointer.

At that point I wasn't too flustered, since I knew that FSX needs a reinstall every once in a while. Since I wanted to get back in the air ASAP, I just ran a repair install on first the main FSX discs, then on Acceleration. That did absolutely nothing, so I did a uninstall then reinstall for FSX. FSX without acceleration worked fine (as far as I could see, there may have been an issue when pressing escape in free flight, it would exit fsx without warning), but when I installed Acceleration, I had a new problem. Whenever I would press fly now, fsx would give me a fatal error. In Event Viewer it looked like this:

Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14
Faulting module name: atiumdag.dll, version: 9.14.10.984, time stamp: 0x5221203b

Faulting process id: 0x1164
Faulting application start time: 0x01cecec11f8c8008
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\atiumdag.dll
Report Id: dc573f90-3ab4-11e3-917a-005056c00008

Then very flustered, I uninstalled again, ran CCleaner three times to get my registry cleaned, then reinstalled. When I ran fsx to test, it worked fine (except for the escape button problem I referenced earlier). When I installed Acceleration, guess what? I was back to the same problem I had in the first paragraph. I'm starting to think at this point God himself is sabotaging my computer to get me to finish my damn college applications.

Does anyone know how to fix this, or should I just go get a copy of Prepar3d? RIP FSX :violin:

Atiumdag.dll belongs to your ati driver set. It seems to be broken. I'd recommend to reinstall the ati video drivers.

or you might have a card going bad on you. Make sure all of your fans are running and if the card has a fan check it as well.

I uninstalled my video drivers in safe mode completely, restarted, then re installed the latest drivers, then restarted again to no avail. There's a slightly new error here, I actually get a fatal error like in the second paragraph above with the same dll at fault.

I don't think the card is going bad. I opened the side case on my desktop and visually saw the fan running. FSX is the only game giving me issues right now.

If you mentioned what model video card you have, I missed it.

What do you have??? Not knowing that, I can't make any specific suggestions.

Just went thru the same problem last week. This was posted by EasternHops: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=167538
It has to do with Net Framework 4.5

This is what I went thur to FIX IT.

1st my PC specs: HP pavilion p6-2003w, AMD E2-3200 APU with AMD RadeonHD 6370D graphics 512mb, 2400mhz (4000mhz,max,when AMD overdrive activated), 2 core(s) 4gigs ram, 1000gig harddrive, OS Windows 7sp1-64bit, MY sim FSX with Acceleration, using a Saitek ST290pro joystick. Monitor 24" flat wide screen.

Had over 1000hours flight time with no problems at all, once I got FSX tweeked, I had a smooth running, no stutter sim.

Here's what happened, Bear with me I'll try to make it short and sweet. Got a update notice from Windows update, the usual security, and one optional, a driver update for the AMD graphics 13.9 as mentioned above by EasternHops. Well the 13.9 update installed Net Framework 4.5, and they tell you on the AMD support page that Net 4.5 will be installed, so it's no surprise. Well I did the updates, how can you go wrong with 2 trusted products right? Well It was the middle of the week and I usually flightsim on the weekends, so nothing with the sim, but what started happening was my monitor would just shut off, and I had to hold the power button on my PC to shut down to restart. The pc came back on with no problem, monitor and all,no prob getting online. Than again my monitor just shuts off, between 10 to 30 mins like clockwork. So I check my power options, monitor is set to powerdown after 1hr like always, so why is it shutting down in less than an hour? Did a search, could be monitor going bad, could be graphics card going bad. I plugged in my other monitor from my other pc, same problem, so now I'm thinking, darn, please don't be the graphics card. It's neither, It's Net 4.5., and thanks EasternHops for bringing it up. First I rolled backed the AMD driver, no problem with that. Turned on the pc, did some web viewing, for about 2hrs, no prob. Go to do a flight, FSX fires up, sim looks good start flying, all is well, hit alt to bring out the menu, go to lower a sound setting, bam , Fatal error. Fire up the sim, no prob, start flying, no prob, go to the menu, fatal error. The main culprit Atiumdag.dll. So now I uninstall the Amd drivers using the AMD uninstaller downloaded from AMD, it cleans your PC of all Amd graphics drivers so good, that it sets your graphics card running on the basic windows system that I was shocked to see that my graphics was down to 16mb.
Reinstalled an older AMD driver update (12.1). Still got the same problem, redownloaded, directx, still no go. So now I go to Net frameworks, tried to get back Net 4.0, no go, MS says that I have the latest Net framework which is 4.5. Won't rollback. So I go and uninstall Netframeworks. Bad idea, really messed up the whole system, Tried restoreing the system as far back as I was able (almost a month back ). Back to the AMD driver before 13.9, but still stuck with Net 4.5, so same problems, monitor shutting down, can't fly on the sim, and now can't watch videos, and now I can't get on Skype to talk with my family Now I'm getting pissed!. So I tried everything searchs, support forums, all I want is to try getting back to Net 4.0, cause that's the only piece of the puzzle that ain't fixed. Tried everything to even just get back to Net 1.0.

Well, I had to reinstall my whole system back to factory conditions. Now I am back to AMD 13.1, and Net 4.0, and everything is back to normal.
So to be sure I updated Net 4.0 to 4.5, and low and behold, all the problems were back, and belive it or not, but the only way to get back to Net 4.0, that's right guys & gals, had to factory reinstall.

Lessons to be learned, #1 DON'T use automatic updates, Choose notify so you can see what is going to be installed or CHANGED.
#2, from what I learned from those techy forums, If your PC is running fine, it's quite possible, you don't need that update.
#3 Keep those rescue disks that came with your PC in a safe place,
and #4, invest in those little flashdrives, so you can never lose your stuff.

Hope this helps you out C130lover, and if someone knows how to solve this Netframeworks problem let me know, now back to that nasty letter I'm writing to Microsoft!!!!

You're right, that is the problem. I ran FSX in DX10 mode and it works perfectly. I guess I'll either have to find a way to make an older driver work or get a new NVIDIA card. Thanks all for the help.

Glad that it's working again.

My first ATI video card was a Radeon HD 5670 too.

When a software update reduced my system to slightly above useable, I was a little unhappy.

I resolved it by deleting the software & drivers in safe mode. I then installed version 8.x or 9.x. From there I updated to whatever my last one was at the time, and never had another problem.

Last year I found a real good deal on a ASUS Radeon HD 6870, and expected a fair sized improvement. Believe me, your card is still a good card. I found only a small improvement with the Radeon HD 6870.

I know it's a decent card. I need to invest in a newer CPU if anything.

Only problem with that is your mother board is capable of supporting a few CPU'S if you are lucky and the odds are that the other CPU'S are not much better than the current one you are using.
I recently upgraded my system and I have a I7 INTEL Quad core with a Sandy bridge. Of course shortly after I bought this one Intel released the same CPU with a IVY bridge which is a better CPU But the good news is my mother board will support that CPU as well, but I doubt if I will change it at this time. It is not what you would call cheap around $300-$400 dollars. Of course when you consider the fastest Intel CPU you can buy runs around $1,500 the other one is cheap

Hi all,

It appears I have that issue as well, Fatal Crash- which I never had in years.

I have a HD5770, CCC 13.9 and Windows Update manually. Net 4.5 is there.

Should I roll back the driver to the previous version, and what about 4.5 ?

Any help is appreciated!
