I lost my Ground

Postby vbneil54 » Tue Oct 01, 2013 10:32 am

Hi,
I installed a ton of addon scenery, most of it in the wrong place, but after doing that, I lost my ground.
There is water every where there should be dirt.
I still have buildings, trees, roads, but they are on the water, not the ground. Runways, taxiways are all good, but no dirt. Even the mountains are water.
I replaced all the files in the Scenery directory with the original install files thinking I would restore whatever file I over wrote, but no luck.
I was able to get the add on scenery in the correct directory, but turned off most of it in settings, still no ground.

Please help.
Thanks,
Neil

I can only hope you made a back up of your FSX files before you made any changes if not you are going to have your work cut out for you deleting the garbage out of it.
I hate to preach but one should always make a back up of any file before you make a change to anything. This is what I call the FSX GOLDEN RULE.

uh, no backup.
So I should just maybe try reinstalling it and see if it fixes it?

I'm affraid a reinstall wont help you.
As Gary said, you need to delete everything you've put into the wrong places, before reinstalling.
Sorry, it can be some hard work, and be careful not to delete anything else.

One other thought you can try is to delete all of the folders that the new scenery was in because even though you removed it from your cfg file there may still be textures that are still out there. Also if you have fsx running when you deactivated the scenery you have to restart FSX before you will see any changes.
HOLD THE PHONE I just thought of something that might help you out. Try doing a system restore back to a date before you made any changes this just might work for you.
But I have to caution you if you do a system restore any thing else that you added between now and the restore point you used will also be lost.
But this just might be your saving grace.
If you do not use system restore than you are on your own. You can uninstall and reinstall FSX but that is a lot of work.
If you do decide to uninstall and reinstall do not forget you need to make sure all of the old folders are gone and than run the FSX reset tool before you can reinstall FSX

Well,
I had to uninstall FSX, and all the junk, then install it all again. What a pain.
I know what I must do now....BACKUP the thing before I install any new scenery. I put the plains back in with no issues and some of the missions I really wanted.
Thanks to all for helping me out on this, it was a great lesson, too bad I had learn it this way.

Forgot to mention,
Everything works great. I'll load scenery one at a time this time instead of 10-15 at a time.
Thanks,

Now you got it. But do not beat yourself up to bad you are not alone when it comes to issues like these. I think we all have done something like this at least once in our lifetime.

If only once, then you're lucky

Btw, be sure to read and understand every install manual in every download ;)
