Hello forum -

I am brand new to the world of flight sim and have been into it for just over 2 weeks now.

I started out with the beginner missions in fsx and did really well until I got to the one that's the intro to jets and now I realize there's a LOT to learn but I'm excited and in for the long term because it's the jets that I got into this for to begin with.

I've been seriously active in researching and learning, watching youtube videos of people showing their successful landings and takeoffs (some of these are AWESOME!), reading all the inserts that came with fsx plus everything I can find online, and so on, and I am definitely learning new things every day.

A couple of initial questions though:

1. I experimented with adding skins/liveries/repaints and when I finished the part where you plug it into the Notepad file I was "denied access" and couldn't complete it. Any ideas? Do I need to go back and set up my fsx on my computer all over again only this time set it up under administrator? I am running Windows 7 with the minimum system requirements to be able to run fsx if that helps.

2. When I did download and plug in a totally new jet (the total plane which was an Aer Lingus and not just the repaint) to add to my aircraft I did it from one of those freeware sites and while the jet showed up in my list of aircraft when I went to actually "fly now" with it the outside view of the plane was blank wherever the aircraft was supposed to be, from any view. Was this a bad file or something? Also, where is the most reliable, safest place online to add liveries and new aircraft? I don't mind paying for them if they're the real deal and won't screw up my computer in any way.

3. Any ideas as to how to best approach my learning to fly the jets? Any recommendations for learning material?

Welcome to the world of FSX
If you are trying to change the FSX CFG file for some strange reason windows 7 makes the file a read only file. You will need to uncheck the read only box . The other thing you should know is that it is not advised to install FSX in the default location with Windows 7 or Windows 8 Default location is C:/Program files/Microsoft Games
You could run into issues with some third party software. The best place to install FSX is on a different drive other than the one your OS is on.
But not every one has this option so just create a folder of your choice any where except in the programs file folder.
When it come to adding anything to FSX the best thing to do is NEVER download anything straight int FSX bad things can happen when you do this.
Also if you get a waring about an existing file be careful how you answer this as you might not want to. Unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing and even than it is advised to make a copy of the file first before overwriting it so if you make a mistake you can put it back.
Most of us create unique folders for addons such as FSXPLANES FSX TERRAIN and so forth this way you can open the zip file and see exactly what you are getting. Most downloads come with a readme file that will explain any steps you need to install the file.
As for downloads there are several good sites AVSIM is one This site is another as for pay ware I would not bother with that being that you only meet the bare system requirements you will not be able to enjoy the product as the more detailed you get the slower the sim will run .
FSX is a CPU hungry program and having lots of ram does not hurt either and of course a good video card will be needed otherwise you will have to turn every thing down just to get it to run decently. Sorry about that but that is the way it is.
As you can see by my signature and others as well it takes a pretty good system to run FSX wide open.
As for training start small say the CRJ or even the lear jet and learn to fly it good before going to the heavies.

The poster above is right about everythink, but if You really want to learn to fly, start even smaller.

Start with a single prop, learn how to fly vfr and ifr, go to a twin, then to a small jet and then fly heavies. In this way You are not only learning to fly, but you learn also a lot about fsx and aviation at large.

But most important, do what You want, there are a lot of ways to play with fsx and none is wrong.

have you got "user Account control"?
2 ways to fix modding aircraft with Vista and Win 7 are.
1: Move the aircraft from FSX to desktop so you can mod it, then put it back.
2: Disable User Account control so you can change the program in it's self.
