FSX crashes without any messages.

Postby JetMax » Sun Jul 07, 2013 4:05 pm

Hello all,

i am new in this forum and would start with a problem which i am facing nowadays with FSX. I have the FSX Deluxe edition and previously i had no problem whatsoever playing the game (i literally would fly around 4 or 5 hours at a go). but nowadays after entering the game and flying for around 15 to 20 mins the game crashes without any messages or any other type of warnings. i don't understand what's going on.

My spec is:

Toshiba Satellite A205-S5833
RAM:1 GB
Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
AGP:256 MB
Intel Pentium Dual Core 1.73GHz
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit

I know my specs are not the optimum selection for FSX, but i used to play smoothly (a bit slow during the early mins or start up). Its a new problem that i am facing. Any help is greatly appreciated cause i am desperate to play this game again. Thanks and Happy Flying! :)

First - Welcome to SimViation.

Second - they may move this to the hardware section.

Anyway, you have a problem, so let me ask you a question -
How good would you say that you are with hardware? I ask this mainly because I think that you, or someone else, will be taking your laptop apart soon.

That laptop is more than a few years old which makes me guess one of 2 things are wrong inside. It could easily be either one or the other, there is no best guess. Flip a coin.

First guess is over heating of some components. CPU, GPU, or a blocked/dead fan.

Second guess would be spilled drinks/food. Last month I had to clean out an accumulation (as in this must have happened several times) of spilt Coke from the memory and hard drive areas of her laptop.

Either way, head over to CPUID.com and download HWMonitor. It's free and might help you to spot any overheating problems.

Give that a try first.

many thanks OldAirmail for the feedback,

i ran the HWMonitor and things are going pretty well there. Atleast what i can understand. I had uploaded a screenshot of the monitor.
As per spilling of foods or drink, there haven't any spills but ya only cigarette ash. I guess i have to do a major cleaning.

My question is where do you have FSX installed at. If you used the default location that could be a problem as well.
The default location is c:/Program Files/Microsoft Games.
The problem is that starting with Windows 7 The Program Files folder is under tight security and because of this FSX can have problems especially true if there is third party software present.
For this reason it is advised to install FSX in a different folder other than Program Files. The best place to install it is on a separate hard drive if none present than make a folder of your choice as long as it is not in the Programs Files Folder.
Now mind you the other post made so far here could also be correct.
To me FSX is not what I would call a Laptop friendly game because of the video needed and a lot of laptops will not support a video card and the ones that do can be a costly investment <<r

appreciated your feedback garrymbuska,

Firstly, i hadn't installed in the default installation drive (Drive C). I always install programs in other drives apart from C

Secondly, i admit FSX is not a laptop friendly game and my laptop is quite aged as well (almost 5 years old now  ). I also have a strong feeling that the problem has something to do with the technical section of my laptop. It worked well before and all these means i can't play this game happily again :(

I will try lowering all the display settings in FSX and try playing then.

Thanks for all your help and wish me luck captains.

As you said, it was working well enough for you needs, so what has changed?

"I will try lowering all the display settings in FSX and try playing then."

If the heat, or spills aren't a problem, and if you haven't changed the FSX settings, then my next W.A.G would be the hard drive that you have FSX on.

Although hard drives may develop bad spots and cause problems with anything, or programs, written there I would expect other crashes.

So give this page a try - 7 Free Hard Drive Testing Programs.

And that brings up another question. You said -

"Firstly, i hadn't installed in the default installation drive (Drive C). I always install programs in other drives apart from C "

Are you using an external/USB drive for FSX? OR is your drive partitioned to create secondary drives?

A partition would be on the same drive and he said a different drive. I installed my FSX on my D drive
And if it use to work and now does not I also would think Heat or drive problems. I had a hard drive that was deleting parts of a file so that it would no longer run but the system gave me no indication that the drive was bad. It drove me crazy What finally gave it away was when I installed a program and went to run it and got a file not found error. You can imagine my surprise when I looked at the directory and the program was gone. :o
