by that I meant I have higher settings, i.e. sliders moved further to the right, than I did with my previous installation. And no, only a latest high end system can run with sliders at 98%. I'm talking a fast dual core, an 8800 and about 4 gigs RAM even with SP2. No system today can run FSX at full 98% which includes all sliders and CFG tweaks such as LOD Radius and max autogen lines. It is a common confusion that all sliders at max is FSX maxed out. Myself, i have a fairly average system and the fact that I can run FSX so well is nothing short of amazing when you compare it to other people and their experiences.

There are many places that show you a lot of tweaks to make Vista go faster.....Do a Google search for " Faster Vista Tweaks" and you will get many pages.......
here is an example
http://www.petri.co.il/tweaking_window_ ... rmance.htm

I have done many tweaks and the OS is behaving better and faster....making FSX behave better also, but be careful with some of them....

I wouldn't suggest following that web page. A lot of it is smoke and mirrors that make it appear that Vista is running well, but you are really limiting its functionality. It removes indexing which allows for faster searches, and powers the functionality of the search box in the start menu. Also it tells you to turn things off yet doesn't fully explain what they are for, especially under the section for increasing the speed of copying. Also, form my experience, if you have a half decent rig then Aero shouldn't slow it down. Plus Aero is automatically turned off when you run any DX9 or 10 application. To improve Vista performance you need to turn of redundant and un-needed processes. Remove any start process you don't need from the registry, do a few defrags. Also some of the tweaks NickN has listed for XP I have found work under Vista, although I think more could be possible.

Ok, well I disagree with leaving the index service running for many reasons which I wont get into here. It not only should be shut down but eliminated correctly.

As for that website I have no idea about the value of what they post.

Usually what I find on the net is a web site posts 10 tweaks and only 1 of them is actually doing something. The other 9 either do nothing at all or destroy the value the one tweak provided by making Windows run worse.

There is a lot more to tweaking than just turning things off. One must understand the full ramification of turning something off or editing a registry key. What may appear on the surface a good idea to do from some nit-wits half-true and ignorant explanation of how a tweak works, can turn out to be a system wide disaster for performance once certain variables are applied elsewhere.

i looked through that web page and half of it was just useless. the other half i would say meh to and hit the small X in the top right, i did try one thing and that was disabling the aero theme and my memory useage dropped from around 46% to 44% hmm that's not worth doing, i like aero and for that small % of memory im keeping it :)

Got to be honest, I always stop Aero, but like it on my desktop.  So, I have two shortcuts on the desktop (themes), one for FSX minus Aero and the other to return to Aero, takes a second to do before any simming, as well as turning off the sidebar.  No problem at all here.  I`d already turned off Index searching and I stop all processes in the task tray if simming offline.  Works for me, FPS good at this end and smooth as a babies wotsit.  The water effect is outstanding now in SP2, can`t get over it with my 3800 dual core and mere 7600GT, 2 gig ram and Vista 32 bit.  Have to slap myself sometimes before I realize its that good and not a dream.  ;D
