After a few issues with Win 7 recently (namely it refuses to read my iPhone any more which is annoying as I've just got back from holiday and its full of photos!) I decided to give 10 a whirl as my initial intention was to reinstall 7, thus far, I think I won't bother with 7 again!
The upgrade to 10 this morning was utterly seamless which was a great surprise, not found anything yet that won't work and the OS seems very much faster than Win 7, so far,I'm both very surprised by and impressed with it.

As for privacy, everything is set to off until I find out more, Edge seems a huge improvement over Internet explorer, FSX seems happy, GTA V has gained a few fps, Battlefield 4 seems smoother too.

Microsoft seem to have pulled of an upgrade that actually works for once!

Not had to reinstall anything yet, I'll see how it goes over the next few days....

I took the plunge this week and went over to Windows 10, a nice clean install, went very well no real issues apart from I can't get a screensaver working. I also took the opportunity to switch over to Steam FSX so far all is well on that front. I've put some addons, planes and scenery, and all installed with errors. All in all pretty happy so far. 8-) 8-)
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

Edge I read has something to do with the configuration of Java but can't find the Java Control Panel to change the setting or re-configure

somehow I doubt that Microsoft has created a new browser which has a dependence on Java.!

To explain:
It is important to note that Windows 10 does support Java. The issue Edge users encounter is plug-ins are not supported by Edge. By “not supported,” they mean there is simply no way to activate or enable the Java plug-in with the Edge web browser. Period. If Windows 10 supports Java, but the Edge browser does not, the question about how to use Java on Windows 10 remains. The answer lies in alternative web browsers.

Just when you thought you were rid of Internet Explorer forever, surprise! Windows 10 not only includes the new Edge web browser, but includes the old Internet Explorer 11 too. Microsoft realized that prohibitive plug-in compatibility issues existed with Edge. The solution was to bundle Internet Explorer with Windows 10 to combat the potential Windows 10 upgrade show-stopper. If you encounter Java content in Edge, simply click the menu button, and choose Open with Internet Explorer.
however I dont see the connection with FSX so I think we are now well and truly off topic.

After running 10 for nearly two weeks, I've yet to actually catch Windows doing something screwy. I even noticed some pickup on FSX. I'm quite pleased (so FAR!) with 10. Now I wait with baited breath (sure smells like it, wah-wah-wah) for the first major update that will cripple it.

I have had a couple of fatal errors that required FSX to quit, but it's no different from before. Happens when I change 'planes sometimes, or go to different airports.

Sometimes there are different reasons for these crashes. I had them and thought I had memory or graphics card problems.
I then had a thought and disabled all Apple and Google updates in the system startup menu. All crashes stopped.
normally you can click on a box in FSX to indicate that you do not want to pause FSX if an external program interrups with updates or looks for updates.
however all I can say is that disabling the automatic updates from the start menu (this includes starting the update SERVICES for Google and Apple) all crashes stopped.
just a thought which i think has been discussed elsewhere before.

this seems contrary to what others have experienced. worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks Cus, every solution is worth a try. At present I'm more concerned with the huge trees on some of my airports when I load FTX.

You drop aircraft into the simobjects folder as before, well, I did this morning and it worked!

Can't help re the Steam version, I have a physical copy.

Plenty of tutorials on this forum if it's just installing aircraft in general your struggling with.

Check out the FAQ (Frequetly asked questions) thread here...

Just for the record; about 1 year ago I purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 Home installed. Just an ordinary HP laptop from Curry's for everyday use & no intentions of using it for gaming.

I'm very pleased with my laptop which has always worked well after I got used to its little quirks. After my initial reservations I was perfectly happy with Windows 8.1 but over the last couple of months I began to get fed up with being reminded about the free Windows 10 update every time I switched on the laptop or tried to do a Windows Update. (I wish Microsoft wouldn't do this. :x ) Last Wednesday evening I bit the bullet & went for it.

Before going ahead I backed up all my precious photos & other files. I also installed FSX Gold which has never been on this PC. It seemed to work fine after a quick test so I then went with the Win 10 install. This took a couple of hours but was otherwise painless.

My first impressions were that it isn't much different from 8.1 so I couldn't see what all the fuss is about. All my old faithful software like Photoshop Elements 5 works well so no problems there. The first time I tried FSX it wouldn't start & I got an error message saying my graphics weren't suitable. Hmmm, it worked fine on Win 8.1 on the same laptop. :?

Oh well, I thought it strange but not the end of the world as I would only use FSX for troubleshooting purposes anyway. Not one to give up easily I tried it again a short time later & much to my surprise it fired up. After a couple of unexplained CTDs I downloaded & installed a file named UIAutomationCore.dll. That fixed it & I now have a fully functional install of FSX on my new Windows 10 laptop. Much to my surprise my ancient trusty MS Sidewinder Pro joystick also works perfectly. 8-)
I have since successfully installed freeware aircraft & scenery from SimV.

Note: To avoid potential problems I opted to install FSX to a folder on the C: drive outside the default Program Files (x86) location. My FSX is installed to a directory named C:\FSX
