One further question regarding NTune - Would you recommend installing this also ?

Thanks

No

I would overclock using the BIOS and not use any Nvidia clocking tool. Ntune may however be easier for you to deal with than the BIOS. Its only use is for overclocking

Hi Nick,

I have used you great guide to optimize XP and make FSX run really smoothly.
I followed everything and have been flying well ever since your guide was first on here.

The only problem i have now is that ive not read any of your new articles in this forum and have used O&O 10 before you reposted that there were issues with it leaving gaps and NOT to reuse it with Space/Defrag.

I have since Defragged using SPACE several times. I have also installed sever new planes, scenery etc.. like UTX.

What should i do regarding getting my drive Defragged with a good NAME/Defrag without having to uninstall anything?

Also, once i have my hard drive optimized and have a perfect defag by NAME, do i just defrag again by name if i install or uninstall anything else??

Regards

Rik

That is correct

All you will run from this point forward is the COMPLETE\NAME defrag and nothing else

no need to uninstall anything, just run that defrag once a month or after any major add-on install.

With version 10 O&O no longer compacts the files/clusters. It leaves space between the files so if you run ANY defrag other than the COMPLETE\NAME it will fill in all those spaces it left with files that are out of sequence and therefore destroy the optimize a NAME defrag provides

Graphic Example:

In version 8-8,5 the files are compacted like this during a complete\name defrag:

=========================================

Which means, when a SPACE defrag is run for weekly maintenance there is no where for the files to go so it does not scramble the disk back up..

Hi Nick,

I have Vista Ultimate and FSX Deluxe with SP1 installed. I installed nHancer today and tried to remove the profiles and then I get a message:

The selected profile for 1944.....................is predifined by nVidia. Since nVidia changed the way predefined profiles are handled with Forceware 163.x it is no longer possible to delete them.

I have installed Forware V169.4 and have GeForce 8600GT.

After reading your article how can I delete the profiles and make one as your instructions?

The drivers you want are the beta's 169.04 http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_169.04.html

NOTE: That link above is ONLY for VISTA x32

for XP use THIS link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.04.html

For XP x64 use this one: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_169.04.html

For VISTA x64 use this one: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_169.04.html

which are said to have the latest DX10 and other temp fixes which correct frame issues. The next official release is rumored to incorporate changes needed to fix several problems in FSX.

Nvida and Aces are aware of driver related problems with both DX10 and 9 with FSX Accel/SP2

The links above are better suited as of this date 11/12/07 for SP2/Accel. That will change as driver upgrades are released)

The way you replace drivers are as follows:

1.
Download the OFFICIAL driver update.

Input the correct information about your system

NOTE: If you wish to play with the latest BETA driver release, they can be found here:

Input the correct information about your system

For ATI cards go here and input the correct information about your system:

I do not like UD.

Its choked full of unnecessary features which require proper setup or the defrag can make things worse instead of make things better. I prefer the strait forward and simple approach of O&O.

Nick those procedures work fine in XP , However I have tried it in VISTA , Silly Me :), Anyway, I cant seem to get O&O to compact the files by Complete name, no matter how many time I run it, Has anyone been able to get O&O to perform satisfactory in Vista Yet?

I do not understand why you think O&O is not performing the Name defrag. I need a better explanation of why you think its not working

After reading through the threads more thoroughly, I saw you stated that O&O was completely redone for Vista, anyway, back to my observations, maybe I should not pay attention to the GUI, but it appears there are files still scattered around the HD.

Free space showing between allocated block segments, and system volume info scattered about as well, I am on the third complete name frag now , and it still shows I have a 40% fragged drive, when this finishes I will post a screenie. The system boots ok, but not like when I boot into XP.

Guess what it all comes down too, is I need a tad guidance to point me in the right direction, As it stands now, I am going to do all my simming on XP, they can have DX10. I will use Vista for dev purposes, but if I can get it to perform as well as Xp , I am willing to give it a shot.

Thanks for being understanding to all of us, I am more of a Systems integrator than engineer :)

Post an image of the O&O GUI when it is finished so I can see the results. Make sure the pixel size is set to 8 and the shader feature is unchecked. ... settings for view of the GUI disk readout window will allow those changes

EDIT.. I see you posted the image.. you have shading enabled, disable it and set the pixel display to 10 instead of 8. Repost an image

I just started using Vista because I am testing some new hardware. I have not optimized anytthing in it because I must keep a default setup when testing to ensure results are not tainted. I do not like Vista and I really have no desire to use it for FSX or any other application until MS gets another service pack in it (past SP1)

I need to see what the colors are so I can ID the files not moving.

I assume you did run the offline defrag, correct?

Thanks Nick for the speedy reply,
I ran two Space defrags right after The OS was completely updated with all updates and what ever programs i wanted directly on the C: drive. Ran Two Space defrags an offline Defrag and numerous Comp/Name defrags. This image I am Posting is after I unixtalled O&O and reinstalled. This is after Two Space defrags Now, Nothing Further, seems a little tighter on the spacing, but still scattered about. and still shows another 21% out of whack.
Like I stated, I am going to use this OS Primarily for DEV now with FSX, I do Flight Sceneries and have no problems experimenting with this particular OS. I have a complete BU of the OS prior to digging in, so if i have to do a reformat, I will just pop the RTM back in and do a reload from the back up. :)
