Esselbach, I know this is OT, but you have one hell of a system.

I am thinking of getting a quadcore.  Which means a new chipset.  How does your rig perform?

And from the land downunder to whoever started this thread, curios is spelled curious!  Curios are collectors' objects, like my computer.

Apart from server CPUs, your setup is about as powerful as a desktop can get nowadays (although Intel now have there new 45 nanometer processor with 12megabytes of cache on the market but not in Australia).  Presumably with the Job Scheduler/Affinity Mask lines inserted into the fsx.cfg your rig must get very close to maximum, though I suspect still with water and traffic turned down?  It's an important question for me, as I am going to make up my mind in a day or two whether to upgrade or wait.

I flew 15.6 hours, KLAX to YSSY in a 744. But my most enjoyable was a 14.2 hour flight in a Connie from EGLL to KJFK. :)

longest is a flight from melb to hamilton island ( YMML - YMHB )
about 2.3 hours ;D

16 hours and 8 minutes... 8-)

OMDB-KJFK

A real route flown by Emirates on an Airbus A340-500...The real word flight clocks in at around 15 hours 30 minutes, but with FS9 ATC, things are much harder...Oh, and this was real time ;)

Esselbach:  if you go into FSInsider and find PTaylor's blog, you will find amongst his older posts and explanation as to how SP1 allows multi-threading across more than one core.  He suggests adding two lines to your fsx.cfg file (via notepad), that go something like:

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=

The number for dual core is 3 (plse check), but as it is factorial you would need to check his blog for the number for 4 cores.

This allows FSX to load textures across all cores, and this makes a big performance difference, as it is the scenery task that really chokes FSX and gives low fps and the stutters.  Its a big advance.

Also search in some of the older threads, where our gurus NickN and others go into the advantages of this change.

Hey I've repented of being lazy.  I paste below the words and advice out of PTaylor's blog.

"For the fsx.cfg config file:

There is a tweak to control scheduling of threads on cores.

It is not recommended to change these settings unless you have a performance reduction and/or maxed out CPU loads in the PerfMonitor. The tweak is

[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=n

where

n  num of cores scheduled   processor bit mask
1  = 1 core  0001
3  = 2 cores   0011
7  = 3 cores   0111
15  = 4 cores  1111

The processor bitmask shows you what cores will be enabled ( 1 ) and what cores will be disabled ( 0 ), primarily to allow you to see the pattern and be able to pick a bitmask for 8 and 16 cores or more when they are available."
