Q6600...$266
QX6700 gets its multiplier locked and becomes Q6700...$530
QX6800 and QX6850 become the only 2 Xtreme processors and will have unlocked multipliers...$1000 and $1100

Now this was found on some other forums and confirmed by checking some stuff on Intel's website. The prices are not confirmed though, since Intel doesn't show any prices on its website.

Hugo

Those are wholesale bin prices. They will not be the retail price and probably will not be seen by the retail market right away unless Intel places the pressure on the larger retailers/distributors for immediate pricing changes.

I don

Today, July 21st, 07... Price of Q6600 on Newegg.com: $299.99. Cheapest I've seen anywhere, at anytime. Newegg has a habit of grossly fluctuating prices from day to day on their processors. I hope it keeps falling. I'm very tempted to order it ASAP, as it's within 10 bucks of what ppl here say the price will most likely be. I hope they don't screw me over tomorrow and raise the price by 100 bucks and then take 2-3 weeks for it to fall to 290 and below again.

Thats the price cut Mouse. It wont get any cheaper than that until perhaps late August, it is possible they may nudge it down a few buck agian, but I would not count on that with the Q6600

As Miltest and I said, the Q6600 would indeed fall in price regarless of any rumor you may have heard.

make sure you get a proper heat sink with that. The one that comes with it is a joke

If you do not intend to do major overclocks, the Zalman 9700 is a good choice. It will be 10 times quieter than and twice as efficient as the one that comes in the box with the processor. Check the motherboard CPU fan header before buying. Its either a 3 pin or a 4 pin. You have to get the right Zalman 9700 (they make a 3-pin and 4-pin model) for the CPU fan header in order to have proper fan control.

Thanks Nick. I was hoping for $40 lower... but you can't have everything can you :P. Ok I've been hearing a lot about the cooling efficiency problem. I'll be sure to get the proper Zalman.

Edit: My Asus Board is labelled as having a 4-pin CPU power connector. Am I logical in assuming that this is for the fan and I should get the 4 pin Zalman?

I've seen a Q6600 being for for 270 EUR (in Portugal) and it used to cost 530 EUR. And at Novatech (UK store) they are selling the Q6700 for 351 pounds which is 521 EUR... at least that's what's on their website... but they don't state wether they have it or will have it in stock or if they can order it, they only have a link for their e-mail to ask for a date.

It really seems like intel is going to lock the multiplier on the QX6700, remove it from the Xtreme series and just call it quad Q6700. It will be replaced in the Xtreme series by the QX6800 and that one by the new QX6850. It will be kind of downgraded from the Xtreme series into the Quad series thus losing the X and the unlocked multiplier.
All this is supported by the fact that the Q6700 (without the X) really exists (it has been tested by some people and its specs are available on Intel's website). Now it's very unlikely Intel is going to sell two identical cpus (except for the multiplier) at the same price. They will definitely have to lock the multiplier on the Q6700 and just stop producing the QX6700 with the unlocked multiplier.... otherwise everybody would buy only the one with the unlocked multiplier.

Now -> Quad Series: Q6600  Xtreme  series: QX6700 and QX6800
Sometime in the near future -> Quad Series: Q6600 and Q6700 (old QX6700 but now with its multiplier locked)  Xtreme Series: QX6800 and QX6850

Now when this will happen I'm not sure, maybe sometime in August, as NickN said.

Which board? Post a link to it and I will look at it for you. I have been shopping for this stuff for months and have been researching all the ins and outs so I am sure I can point you in the right direction. (If I am wrong I am sure someone will jump in and correct me  ;D    :P )

CPU power, not to be confused with CPU FAN, is usually a 4 or 8 pin connector. For Quads the boards I have been looking at are 8 pin and the fan is then new 4 pin design for digital logic control. You must be careful with a Quad when it comes to power and the power supply. Quads need more juice and the power plug on the motherboad for that is usually 8 pin and they give you the option for the type of CPU you intend to use. You can plug a 4 pin CPU power plug from the PSU into 1/2 of the 8 pin connector for single and dual core but they usually want a 8pin power supply for a quad.

Naaa

The question was FSX and Quad Cores

That has to do with if they work with FSX, how they work with FSX, price, availability and how to correctly install and power it.

If you dont know the answers or have all the install questions right, FSX wont run right.
