It is a cloud of gas, dust and stars. It is a galaxy!!! The one in which we live!! Depending on conditions of visibility it can look like a faint cloud or on a really clear night one can easily distinguish millions upon millions of stars. But, nowadays to see it at all one has to be a considerable distance from any kind of street lighting. The image is clearly the shape of the milky.  All of you who made bets in it's favour can collect!!!!!!!

maybe thats whats wrong in the world..too much light pollution ...not enough people able to see the milky way, which generates a sense of awe and humility....too much awh and not enough awe...sorry if i'm too mushy...

Not you don't have to because you right,I practice a lot astronomy wich today has become more difficult for me & friend to make a start party mounth,everytime we have to travel more far from the city today to achive to see far distance Galaxys, nebula cluster,and more detail solar system planet we have to drive for more than 2 hours wich 7 years ago in 15 minutes we use to have in a closer place

,I made Telescopes(Not for sale or busisness) this is a very old shot 8 years ago,today i have made more Including a 6 inch refractor with a secondary and equatorial mounth

yea alrot, i sympathize.....i built an 8'' reflector once used 2''-3'' pipes...i purchased the mirror, but built the rest.......i gave it to our local planetarium to use but it somehow disappeared...not worth donating things sometimes....nice that they added the milky way to fsx....

I have a 6" brought it out here with me. Got some great views and after 3 months the authorities came and errected a great big sodium street light right outside the proprty!!!  :(
Has anyone seen those pictures of the night side of the Earth?  Aliens must think that this is a twin star solar system!!!

BTW, Alrot, you should know that it wasn't just sailors who used to use celestial navigation: it was a must for pilots also, until fairly recently.

In fullscreen the stars show up very well  but i have had to highlight them due to compression. This view shows the constellation Ursa Major with the two pointers to Polaris "The Pole Star" (in the upper window) Now all you need to do is measure the inclination of Polaris above the horizon. It's 2200hours Zulu  So where is my local airport??
