Gee, makes one wonder how Microsoft Windows in its many versions has become the most successful, most widely used operating system with the biggest library of commercial and free software in the history of computers! And, as many old hardware owners know, Vista runs pretty well now with its service packs and patches. Little secret that should be mentioned, too: the beloved Windows 7 is fixed Vista, much like Windows 10 is fixed 8.
At the university where I work, we are deploying Windows 10 with few problems. No surprise that we identified a 9-year-old industrial-grade graphics scanner that has no drivers, and won't run on Win10. And I ran into a .Net 2.0 program from Kodak which doesn't like .Net 3.5.1 on Windows 10. The free Classic Shell alternative desktop pretty much eliminates any training requirements for Windows XP/Vista/Win7 users, is a must have. Otherwise, I expect most of our computers will be running Windows 10 by this time next year, unless old hardware proves to be a problem.
I remember seeing the same kinds of moans and complaints from Windows 98 users when XP rolled in. Then again when Windows 7 made its debut, and began to supersede XP. It seems to be a cycle, history repeating itself, and people really do hate change. Sure, like any big authority-driven organization, the Microsofties make dumb mistakes according to the all-too-real curse, that big corporations compel people to do stupid things, usually to please their bosses, to get promoted, to be politically correct, and to make a fast buck. Windows 8 and its disastrous gui is proof enough of that. But all in all, I think the Microsoft bashing tends to go over the top, gets kind of silly at a certain point. I'd rather be working on a Windows computer any day instead of a Macintosh or some convoluted free version of Unix. History and the market show that is true for most computer users.
And maybe it should be mentioned that Microsoft and its business partners created some pretty good flight simulators (and a great train simulator too), else we wouldn't be on here, would we? That's hardly "junk".
