This best operating system...still?

Postby Socalpilot » Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:03 am

Hello all,

I've finally gotten fed up with Vista (Ultimate 64bit) and the BSODs whilst flying FSX.

Thanks Andy.

Does it matter what version of XP Pro 64 bit?
Should it need to be SP2 or SP3?

You should always try to get the latest service pack with your operating system, they are designed to improve performance as well as protect your machine.   ;)

Vista 32bit, although you have not listed it, it works great for me, loads of people give up with vista as there are so many bugs with it, but once you get the free windows vista SP1 then I have had no problems with it. But Vista will ONLY work recent computers. many people hate it because they havn't installed all the auto updates or they try it on a pc which it is simply not made for. Im so fed up with people saying vista is rubbish when they get CTD when it is there pc which cant cope with it or they just dont give vista enough time to update itself.

Vista 32bit works great!

Have to say I have never had a problem with Vista and FSX, still horses for courses.

I'm with Bullet. I wouldn't give up on it just now... XP is soon to lose its support and you will be left probably worse off than you were. Find out what the BSODs mean (Google the error code) and find a fix. Bad hardware may yet cause a problem on other operating systems.

Installing MacOS, as far as I am aware, would be illegal. The EULA states you can only install it on Mac hardware. However, Windows can be installed on Mac hardware and pretty much anything. Oh and if you go with a Mac, be sure not to use it to build nuclear weapons... I believe that is against the EULA too, lol.

My personal opinion would be to fix Vista or wait for 7. XP is old software and will lose its support - This means no virus protection updates and you will be a sitting duck in shark infested water. Vista and more modern operating systems will be supported and fixes will be released for them if things go wrong. But I still think that you just have something wrong with your system, hence the errors, and changing operating system might not remove these errors so it is best to fix them before spending money to find out you are back where you began.

I upgraded from Vista to XP X64

Its smoother, faster and much more reliable than Vista and it also runs better than Windows7 which is suppose to be the upgrade from Vista soon to be released

good luck

Who am I to query my mentor, Nick, yet after much travail, anguish and a brief intention to go back to XP, I can find no real problems with Vista Home Premium 64bit.

I am certainly not thinking about a change until Windows 7 goes RTM.

Allegedly windows 7 trims  some of the fat off Vista, while giving improved performance.  I'll wait, which is quite something for me seeing the W7 beta is freely available.

Then Intel i7 will go through its next tock, the next videocard will turn up to improve on the GeForce 280 and so it goes.

There is still an exciting adventure ahead of us, and I suspect one that will always be expensive but fun.

I in the 'no trouble with Vista' crowd.
Ultimate x64 here and not a single complaint, with anything about it. Working fine for me and does a wonderful job of handling memory.
FSX is running fine on it too.
I consider my move to Vista a upgrade. I'm pleased with everything it does and for me it has been the most stable OS I have had to date.
I don't even remember the last time I restarted Vista. All other OS's I have used (I have a copy of nearly all since 95), have always needed restarting once in a while.

But hey, I am not here to sell it. Just wanted to share my experience with it.

But I do like XP Pro as well. I only have the x86 version of it though.

PS;  what is a BSOD.

I've never had one ever with Vista.

Does it hurt?
