How Charles Lindberg managed to see where he was going, in that very strange cockpit, is a total mystery to me!
More than anything else, how did he manage to LAND the thing is quite the mystery to me. :-?
Flying straight can be managed by comparing the two lateral windows (and the same for visual navigation). Not doing a CFIT can be managed with knowledge of the terrain and good situational awareness... and even with the periscope as a last resort given that it was famed to give a pretty poor lookout of what the plane had in front anyway...
But a LANDING?
I guess brass balls, excellent airmanship and stubborn refusal to crash (plus a sturdy landing gear) must have helped, seen that the only way I can land the simulated thing, and badly at that, is to put my POV outside the plane and looking from behind the tail (not comparing my airmanship to His at all, simply detailing my difficulties with the blasted thing).
