You should be able to turn your smoke on, then save it as your default flight. After that, any time you start, the smoke should be on, and if you change aircraft, if they have smoke, it should be on, also... I think!

The "smoke" is already an effect, and can certainly be added to any aircraft.cfg. I'm surprised that saving a default (using the Extra 300) with the smoke on didn't spawn with the smoke on, or smoke on with anything else with smoke on after selecting a different aircraft.

What type of smoke are you wanting to display?...under what conditions?
Something like engine smoke?
At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.
