do thermals exist in the game outside of the gliding missions? if so is there certain spots where they are? or are they everywhere if conditions are right?

Though I don't soar, I encounter thermals everywhere while flying light ga.. As far as I can tell, they appear in all weather conditions, except the 'Clear' weather theme. They are supposedly spawned based on landclass as defined in the ThermalDescription.xml file but I see them in areas I wouldn't expect them, like over the Great Lakes.

A visual que to the thermals' presence can be set in the Display Settings-Weather tab.
Under Thermal Visualization select:
Natural-you'll see a few eagles soaring on the thermal
Schematic-you'll see a semi-tranparent vertical spiral.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

CumulusX is an add-on for FSX for the creation of a soaring environment. It creates thermal lift.

Available here.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

You would enjoy flying with us:
www.ukvga.org.uk

We fly online and use CumulusX to provide us with 'synchronised' soaring conditions.

We simulate the typical Gliding Club as we know them in the UK, with training, circuits, 'local' soaring' and cross-country tasks modelled on the real-word Regional and National competitions, and the real-world airspace restrictions provided through VATSIM.

Get your A & B, Bronze, Silver and the rest using BGA rules.

We even provide a 'launch-point controller' to put your cable on (WinchX), call 'all clear above and behind' and 'take up slack'.

Soaring online through VATSIM, but we stay VFR, fly absolutely by the real-world book, and have a lot of fun.
