Ok so I just did some tests in the F-18 and this is what I found:
Started a flight from San Francisco with real world weather on. Wind was out of 330 at 40kts at FL350 and a 100% fuel load.

Theres an odd spike in fuel consumption as the afterburner engages which allows the F-18 to supercruise in excess of Mach 1.
