Merlin in FSX...

Postby hhomebrewer » Tue Oct 06, 2009 11:34 pm

I installed it as I always have with FS9 airplanes. In the list of availables I see the different models listed, but there are no thumbnails-- just a red question mark where the thumbnail should be. I clicked and was sorely disappointed. What went down? Why no successful installation? I then went back to the Aircraft files and deleted it. I still want it, but have no idea how to proceed...

There is a "Questionmark" because there is no thumbnail in the texture folder of the basic FS9 download.

What other problem was there to disappoint?  I only have one gauge that pops up and is not supported, and a blackened canopy.  I mentioned those two "problems" in the screenshot topic. But then again, it's been a while. Are you encountering any otehr problems, and if so, what are they?

(I'll be able to help more tomorrow morning, at work now, and duty calls.. :P )

As boikat said, the thumbnail is just a small jpg file in the texture(s) folder(s) of the plane. If it's not there, you get the question mark because no pictures are available for that plane.
I don't know why you should be dissapointed about this, and why you should delete the files just because you don't get a thumbnail :/

PS: there's a small utility module called auto-thumbnail, that will automatically create a thumbnail for the currently selected plane while you're flying. In fact it takes a screenshot and resizes it, and places it in the appropriate folder. Sometimes it doesn't work but most of the times, it does.

I got rid of it because I didn't want it hanging around in there in an incomplete condition. I'll go back to it eventually. I've lost interest in FS, lately. My FS9 went to hell with its insufficient virtual memory thing and FSX doesn't have all the neato planes that FS9 has. Just not much there to keep me interested...

The lack of a thumbnail means this is an FS9 aircraft. There might be other problems with it in FSX but the missing thumbnail is easily fixed & no reason to delete it.

Yeah; FSX runs pretty well. I don't see any cars and trucks down on the roads, but I can live with that. I had launched FS9 38,492 times in the past until one day I get the insufficient virtual memory message. I just don't have the stomach to do what has to be done to alleviate the problem-- if anything at all can be done...

I'm sure you've already tried it but a full uninstall/install should do it.

Actually, no. Not yet-- no heart for it. I have lots of add-on scenery or mesh or whatever the technical name is. It takes ages to put it on. I don't know if the memory shortage will pop up with or without the scenery add-ons. I like to believe the scenery and the program are separate entities. If the program is too big for the VM (never was before), I'm probably skrood.

It's difficult to guess what is causing the problem. I doubt it would be addon scenery providing it's correctly installed.

If you have enough HDD space you could do a duplicate install of FS9. This will run separately from the original install & is the most effective way of backing it up. You could then transfer any addons you wish to keep from the original before removing it.

The offending installation of FS9 has been duly vaporized. Did that maybe a week ago. I do have it on the previous 250Gb drives that were on this machine, but I am hesitant to pull it from there and put it on these new ones. I got "facebooked" with some sort of viruses or somesuch bad karma after signing-up at that site (since dropped) requiring new drives, new installs all over the place, money spent, time lost, tears shed, curses thrown like rose petals at a wedding...

I am so gunshy and afraid of everything digital and computer-related right now, I just sit at home all day and suck my thumb...

I can understand that & it's not for me to interfere. As you seem to like FS9 perhaps it would be fun to start again from scratch whenever you regain your confidence. ;)

Fresh installation and FS9 runs just fine. No add-ons of any kind so far. Too late now to do anything else. We'll put on some scenery tomorrow then start pulling planes, gauges and effects off the original 250Gb drives. I got one of those hard-drive docking stations to do this. They are neat. It's the Thermaltake Blac-X ST0005U model for SATA drives (only). Has a nice heft; feels solid. I recommend one for file-transfers and back-ups. I give it 4.5/5.0 stars. They are also available for IDE drives. Get one!

So far, so good. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Please install addons systematically & check each one out in FS before adding another one. It might be a better idea to download the files again rather than transferring them from your old installation.
