FSX deluxe vs. Normal

Postby Frequent Flyer » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:08 am

Hey all,
I'm new around here (as you see).
I am quite intrested in Flight Simulation and lately I have downloaded the FSX Demo - which is really great.
I have some questions regarding the full versions of FSX:
  • I saw the differences between the Normal and the Deluxe versions of FSX on Microsoft's site. What do Glass panel (G1000) cockpit and Tower controller stand for?
  • Are there only 40/45 airports in the game - or these are just the high-quality airports and there are other airports (in less good quality)? If there are other airports, how many?
  • What kind of missions the game includes?
  • Air trafic: is there air trafic built-in in the game, or do I have to buy an addon (such as MyTRAFFIC)? And how frequently will I see an AI airplane?
  • Is the Deluxe version worth it's price, or should I buy the Normal version?
  • Online play - how do I do that? Do I need to buy an addon for that? Where can I find a server?

That's it for now, thanks in advance to all of you willing to help [smiley=thumbup.gif],
Frequent Flyer.

P.S. Simviation is a great site - I've found some really nice airplanes for download here - Thanks alot to all designers/programmers/etc.

I would suggest the Deluxe version.

Beyond the extra game content provided by the Deluxe version, it is also the only source for installing the SDK, Software Developement Kit.

The SDK is a suite of tools and resources that allow you to create/modify content for the sim, something you might want to do down the road.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Hey all,
I'm new around here (as you see).

Welcome :)

The "glass cockpit" is when you have a big LCD screen in the plane, big like te screen of a mobile computer, that displays all the instruments (like in a modern Boeing), instead of the separate instruments like for exemple in the Cessna. It's a more modern version.

The Tower Controller feature is for multiplayer. You can act like a controller in an airport. You sit in the control tower of the airport, it's all in 3D and you have all the radars and other screens to help you visualize the surrounding air traffic. Your task is to guide the other players which want to land at your airport.

  • Are there only 40/45 airports in the game - or these are just the high-quality airports and there are other airports (in less good quality)? If there are other airports, how many?

You saw the answer above, there are approximatively 23.000 airports modelled in a generic way in FSX, and 40/45 are in high quality with the real airport buildings etc....

  • What kind of missions the game includes?

Usually missions that provide fun or stress. There are mission that seem simple (like, delivering something) but suddently one of your engines dies. There are also search and rescue missions that require very good piloting skills (especially with the helicopter). There are also missions for pure fun, Sci-Fi etc...

Additionnaly, in Acceleration you get some missions for carrier operations (landing on aircraft carriers in the ocean with the Hornet), and also a bunch of air races like the one of Reno, with AI opponents.

  • Air trafic: is there air trafic built-in in the game, or do I have to buy an addon (such as MyTRAFFIC)? And how frequently will I see an AI airplane?

There is traffic, but it's not made of real airlines. Best is to install payware or freeware traffic to get real airlines (like MyTrafficX or World of AI).

  • Is the Deluxe version worth it's price, or should I buy the Normal version?

FORGET THE NORMAL VERSION. Get the GOLD (Deluxe + Acceleration)

  • Online play - how do I do that? Do I need to buy an addon for that? Where can I find a server?

That's it for now, thanks in advance to all of you willing to help [smiley=thumbup.gif],

P.S. Simviation is a great site - I've found some really nice airplanes for download here - Thanks alot to all designers/programmers/etc.

I don't know for the online play, sorry.
In any case, never hesitate to ask for adivses :)

Hi and Welcome to Simv. Also welcome to the wonderful world of FSX.

Here are some answers to your questions.

1. glass panels are ONLY available in the Deluxe version. These are garmin multi function displays that replaces many gauges. Tower controller is only available in multiplayer in FSX deluxe.
2.HECK NO!!! There are over 24,000 airports. They are all in excellent quality. Those 40-45 airports usually have more scenery to them.
3.All kinds. From airline pilot to cargo pilot. everything including in-depth tutorials.
4.All the airplanes you fly are also AI. There are some AI only planes but those are a different story.

Yep, started when I was between 5 and 7 with a game called "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe" then I moved on to CFS1, played that for a few years, got FS2002, tried CFS3, then FS2004 then bought FSX. So I suppose its been closer to 13 years of flight simming fun for me!

But sometimes I really miss SWOTL, I was usually pretty good at that game. I remember one time I botched a landing in an FW190 and rolled the plane, killed my best pilot and therefore was unable to ever play as him again. I had a ton of medals with that pilot, I actually cried to my dad ;D
