What can I expect with the new PC

Postby Stuart Holmes » Mon Feb 09, 2009 7:28 am

Hi,

I built a new PC on Saturday and have been following the instructions on Nicks' 'Tweaks' pages, but am disappointed with the results.

The PC is a Quad 2.4Ghz on an XFX 780i SLI motherboard with 8Gb DDR2 Ram. GPU is an Nvidia 9800GTX+, using latest drivers and Nhancer.

FS9 is running really well (tweaked according to the forum) but I expected more from FSX (about 10-15FPS, much worse over complex scenery).

Additionally, I'm having no luck installing my PMDG 737, I get the error saying there's no valid install in my registry (Or something similar). The FS9 installation (and, indeed, the FSX one) are in the program flies (X86) folder - is that the problem?

Thanks in advance.

You could try Flight 1's Registry Repair Tool. http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=library

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

To run FSX with any kind of scenery cranked up.. you need, at minimum, a quad-core CPU running at more than 3.0GHZ... and this assumes a high-end video-card (which you do have).

I built a system last year, that was very similar to what you're running. I had the Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz, and it ran FSX very well on "medium" settings.

I just built a Q9950 system.. and have it running at 3.6Ghz.. it does noticeably better.. but still cannot handle "high" scenery settings when I'm near airports.. or lots of autogen.

Spend some time in the hardware and overclocking forum.. That Q6600 is begging to be sped up  :)

Hi

Nice to hear you got everything together :)
Sorry to hear of your disappointments though :'(

A lot of it is your graphics card. I had a feeling you might not be too pleased with the performance of the 9800gtx. While it is a fair card, it is quite a bit below the top running single core cards. You can probably get a few more fps through more tweaks, but in all honesty, the 9800 just isn't really powerful enough for fsx.
Are you using the 3 monitors you wanted to try, or just one?

If it isn't too late, I would return it for exchange on a 280 or 285 gtx. Another option would be to get another 9800 and run in sli mode, but there are still some issues with sli/cross fire.

I would also question the 2.4GHz cpu too. However as discussed before, overclocking it will bring it up to speed (pun intended), lol.

You have a nice system for sure. But the system it takes to run fsx full on won't be out until around late 2010 or so. That really is close to the truth, you know.

Anyway, most other games will probably run well enough on it. FSX is just one that (like the other FS's) is ahead of hardware available. There will come a day when it will run snappy without the need of any tweaks, but seriously, that day has yet to come for 'normal' pc's.

I hope you are able to get the 737 installed. Sorry I have no suggestion there, but I feel sure someone here can offer more help. Hoefully the tool Dave posted a link to will be all you need.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Dave - I'll run the app when I get home tonight and see if that helps - Thanks.

Brett - Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I was being optimistic in my expectations for FSX. I've no inclination to start overclocking - it works fantastically well in FS9.
