you can also...
open a new IFR flight and shoose the same one that your already on....
then when you get the option to move plane to airport, choose NO...
then when you go back to the cockpit, choose request ifr clearance, and it will start right where you are at, and not back to the begining of the flight.

That's where I ran into the problem, I know how to it through the ATC, but when you do (try it with keeping keeping the original flight plan in the GPS), and if you keep the aircraft on GPS, it will turn you around to the starting airport.
You would still have to access the flight plan in the gps and select which leg you want to continue on to properly continue the flight.
