adding an airplane to flight sim

Postby newguy1 » Sun May 25, 2008 6:12 pm

Hey guys I know I'm going to catch flak for this but I"m trying to add an airplane to flight sim.  I have it downloaded to my computer and unzipped, but I can't figure out how to add it to the sim.  I know you're supposed to go into the flight sim program files but I can't find them on my computer.  Any help on where or how to find this file??

If you installed Flight Simulator X to the default location:

C: Drive

Program Files

Microsoft Games

Flight Simulator X or FSX...I custom installed but its something like this..

SimObjects

Aircraft...

The above is the default tree to follow to find the place to install your Dled aircraft.

But you have to make sure you are installing the correct folder...
Go thru the downloaded and unzipped folder til you reach the end of its tree...then look for the README file.  Open this and read it carefully.  Then follow the instructions for installing the aircraft.  There might be effects, guages, sounds or textures to install to a particular place...Install these as isntructed.

If no special instructions or the like, you back up to the folder that contains the readme...no farther.  This is the folder you copy to the Aircraft folder in SimObjects.  In other words you copy the folder that contains the ReadMe...Not the whole unzipped package.  Hope this is clear because its important.

Then start the sim and the aircraft should be in the selection screen.

Hope this helps.

Open Windows Explorer, open "Program Files" look for "Microsoft Games", you should see "Microsoft Flight Simulator X".  In the folder for the aircraft that you downloaded and un-zipped, there is usually a "Read Me" file with directions.

Usually, it will say something like:  "...copy to FSX/simobjects/airplanes/".  Just copy the aircraft folder and paste it into the "airplanes" directory.

Soeme downloads also have gauge and effects folders, dopy and paste their *contents* to the FSX gauge or effects folders (DO NOT copy the download folder itself into the FSX directory, JUST the contents.)

It's in the "Program" directory in "Microsoft Games".

I would also caution that with some model packages being a bit complex, there may be a self-installer once you unzip the package, there may be different folders to save in different locations (gauges, etc).

*Typically*  there should be a "readme"  document that may also provide installation guidelines.instructions.

If you're new at this my Windows Basics & Working with Windows articles might help. http://www.simviation.com/lair/Windows%20Basics.htm

Now read this installation tute. http://www.simviation.com/fsxaircraftinstall.htm

The principle is exactly the same for all versions of Windows including WinXP. Unfortunately Vista is somewhat different & I have no knowledge of it.
