Glass cockpit? Panels won't go away!!!

In FS2004, if I was in the cockpit view and hid the main panel by pressing SHIFT + 1 I could use the num pad to look around and al would be clear except the view I was looking at. However in FSX, when I press 0 on the num pad and then shift 1 to hide the cockipt, if I look round using the num pad, for example if I press 7, I can see out the window but it still shows the panels, which I don't want to see.

Is there any way to solve this?
