Are you talking about the FSX terrain mesh here?

http://www.simviation.com/fsx_terrainmesh.htm

I tried the Alaskan mesh by Raimondo Taburet a few days ago. It didn't make a big difference, but I took screenshots with and without it, and you can see how the terrain was changed a little. While flying up the Alaskan Coast, FSX started crashing every half hour or so. I disabled the mesh and it didn't happen again, so I don't know. Maybe a coincidence?
