I do think however the thought about specific tools desigend to automatically convert files and report missing elements in order to prepare older planes and scenery for upgrades may come into being.

That would be nice... except most of it would have to happen in that nebulous zone twixt source-file and .mdl file.. else it's just the same compromises we're dealing with now.

I don't think most developers will be giving the average user access to the source files.

Yes, very dark gray or black will work, or just remove the alpha in some cases

I checked the texture files for that plane in DXTBmp and the only prop file is just a plain BMP. it has no alpha channels that I can find. Of course I don't know beans from apple butter when it comes to model texture files. Same with the prop textures for the Lockheed.
AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core 6000+ processor,  Nvidia Geforce 8800 Ultra, 3 gig ram.

Sometimes lack of alpha works and sometimes it does not.

You may need to add the black alpha layer Alex mentioned, or, you may have come across something different in which the texture itself uses color code SP2 responds to as invisible.

there you have it

add the black alpha

The reason I mentioned very dark gray Alex was so the person could control the amount of prop showing as it spun. Sometimes props look better when they show a bit more while spinning

not every model is the same in that respect.
