Is it correct to say then that you use the the runway close to the mag of the wind direction? for example runway 12 and 30 and you have the wind blowing in at say 160 mag @ 80kts would it runway 12 to take off from?

It's funny we should be talking about downwind landings. I just got back from a lesson doing circuits, on my last one the wind dramatically changed and the variable 5 knot wind became a 10 knot tailwind on base. The instructor took over and landed it with the tail wind, but it was very hairy! Due to the increased ground speed the flare chewed up most of the runway, and the plane just wouldn't sink. We got down 2/3rds along and stopped.
