Clean Up

Postby Meck » Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:17 pm

Hey,

I unfortunatly have to formate my harddrive (C: ) on which FSX is installed.

My question:

- what files do I have to back-up to have for example the logbook, rewards, etc. after a reinstall of FSX?

- And is it possible to have add-ons (aircrafts, scenery,...) on another HDD than the FSX folder is (maybe by linking the aircraft folder or the aircraft itselfto the SimObjects folder)?

I'm not exactly sure of your #1 question, but you bring up an interesting point with #2.

The FSX.cfg file

Your add-on scenery can be stored anywhere. I do it to 'share' common scenery (object libraries) between sims. The path is recorded when you 'Add' the scenery to your Scenery Library.

You should be able to backup and restore to your new install:
Logbook-.....\My Documents\Flight Simulator X files\logbook.bin
Rewards-.....\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\GrantedRewards.bin

Aircraft-unsure.... Maybe give Felix's method a try before reformatting.

:D  Do you have your "show hidden files" turned on.  App data is a hidden file.

I just tried Felix's suggestion with the FSX Demo & it works perfectly. I see no reason for it not working in the full version.

Here's what I did. I have a remote hard drive which is my J: drive. I created a folder on the J: drive named FSX with a subfolder named Aircraft. I pasted the FS9 default Curtiss Jenny into the J:\FSX\Aircraft folder. I then added the line in Bold type to FSX.cfg

[Main]
User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter
SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft
SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles
SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats
SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals
SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc
SimObjectPaths.6=J:\FSX\Aircraft

Note that if a new aircraft has aliased panel and/or sound the aircraft it's aliased to must be installed to the same directory for it to work.

Have tried that too, but it didn't work. Will give it a second try this afternoon...

I see no reason for it not working if you do it properly. Make sure the path in the FSX.cfg entry is correct & the aircraft have their own panel files.

I couldn't resist trying it immediately, and found the problem: my external harddrive normally shows up as G:, but most likely I had some other storage, maybe my USB-Stick, connected first, and so this one showed up as G: and my harddrive as H:
But in the FSX.cfg it's of course the stick that was searched for the specified folders...
I just have to start my ext. HDD first, or does someone know a setting, which preserves the G: to my HDD??? :-?

Glad you fixed it. I thought it should work but don't think using external drives would be ideal for permanent use. Keeping it all together in the same root directory on your main HDD would be better if at all possible. IMHO

Most likely possible but I'm not qualified to suggest anything. Probably a BIOS setting.

I just have my add-ons outsourced on the HDD; the default ones stay in the original folder, so I can take my notebook without the HDD and be able to fly anyway...

I'll give my it-specialist a try with the plates name... Thank's so far!!!

Ah OK. I see your reasoning but please be careful or it could easily lead to confusion & all sorts of problems with FSX.

Sure! I just don't want my Notebook-Drive messed up with scenery, aircraft and other add-ons... I'll see if it works or if hell breaks loose in a few weeks...  ;D
