After over ten years since I began flying the MSFS, I still havn't become proficient in instrument approaches. I can somewhat follow an ILS glideslope down through the overcast/clouds, but I still don't understand VOR approaches, missed approaches, and approach plates well.

I can fly, and navigate on instruments in IFR conditions without any problems, but I just never took the time to correctly learn instrument approaches

Aint it great ?    A never-ending, learning thing...  :)   If it's something you want to learn, a great tool sits in front of you.

Many months can pass before I'll find myself flying REAL IMC. There's a difference between filing IFR, because the ceilings might be low, somewhere en-route... and filing (and flying) an entire flight where you don't see anything   :o

I promise you that MSFS has made me more competent and confident when it's just me and and an instrument panel...

Brett,

That was an amazing post! I'm quite new to radio navigation / nonprecision approaches. I bought Jeppesen Simcharts and found them great for Airport charts (inc parking/taxing), Departure and Approach charts. However, I was missing some proper sectional charts but after reading your post I realise the FSX map and a notebook will do the trick!

Thanks,
Aleks

Sectional charts are easy to get. Go to your local airport and ask some of the local pilots for their outdated charts. That's what I did before I started flying, and after I started flying and working towards my PPL, I've been accumulating my own outdated charts... ;)

Yeah.. my MSFS "library" is made up mostly of outdated, low-altitude IFR charts.

For real flying, $8 for a chart you'll use once is no big deal, but it's silly to keep your sim-library current and full.

Also.. this is a great site for planning flights...

Thanks guys for allyour replies, and especially yours Brett, but to be truthful i didnt understand a word.
As you have proberly guessed i am really new to this, i mean really new all i know is that a plane flys in the sky if you get where i am coming from.
But seriously i really want to try and get on with the game, but i am getting frustrated as i dont know what i should concentrate learing on. :'(

It can be a little overwhelming. It was for me once upon a time, and still is when it comes to certain areas.

I suggest starting with the lessons in FS. It's a starting point, and will help teach the basics. If you need help understanding anything, we're here to help.
