I dont know about the switch Pappy but the light issue is a problem directly related to FSX and how it deals with exterior lighting, which is different than FS9.
Assuming the aircraft definitely has a logo and other exterior lights, browse to the aircraft in the sim installation. It should be in the SimObjects\Airplanes folder.
Open the folder for the plane and then open ALL the different texture folders listed for the aircraft. Locate all the files in each one of them that have a _l at the end of the file name. Those are the lightmap files for the aircraft.
example names:
737_700_l.bmp
RTwing_l.bmp
etc
Make a COPY of them and PASTE them in the MAIN texture folder for the sim. Flight Simulator X\Texture
You can leave the originals where they were. Moving a copy of the lightmaps to the main texture folder should fire up the lights for you in FSX.
Also, you need to have SP1 installed for correct and proper landing light use of older aircraft made for FS9
