Buffer pools question

Postby retrovertigo » Sun Aug 05, 2007 6:54 am

I've been lucky enough to get hold of an x1950 pro graphics card and was wondering if increasing the buffer pool from the current 5000000 might help at all?

It made a huge difference to stutters using my x800xt pe card and thought now I have a card with 512mb memory that maybe I can adjust things further?

And are there any other settings that might help with larger memory graphics cards? I know my cpu is going to be a bit of a bottle neck (Althon 3200+ barton) but with other games this graphics card has given me a fair old leap in performance.

Thanks.

8000000 for 512 is fine

the rest of the sliders and config tweaks is the same for any card. Being the x1950 will get you in the FSX game, its just barely getting you in and you will need to work with it using the recomendations that were posted on the forum.

With ATI you may want to Disable the Catalyst AI system. I understand there were problems in that area but I do not know if they were fixed in last months driver release. Make sure you go to ATI and get the latest CAT drivers.

AA=4x
AF=16x
Mip or Texture Quality = Maximum or highest quality
Catalyst AI to ADVANCED, <--- note, this may want to be disabled
Wait for Vertical Refresh to #3 on the slider (Application Controlled)

Make sure under API Specific: Enable Geometry Instancing, Support DTX Texture, and Triple Buffering are checked, nothing else.

Under VPU recover, uncheck prepare error report but leave Enable VPU checked

In game set to trillinear filtering and uncheck AA

As per usual you have given an amazingly detailed post. Thanks as always.

I have stuck with the settings I had with my x800xt platinum for now. I wanted to see what framerate increase I would see before starting to add bits of detail here and there.

I have noticed one small problem since using the buffer pools line. It doesn't always load all the correct resolution tiles forwherever I am flying over. It's not a big problem. But I do notice once in a while a tile that hasn't loaded up to the correct resolution as I approach it.

It's a minor niggle, and my flying over mountain scenery now gets me on average around 35fps which isn't too shabby for my own personal needs.
