atc_type/atc_model

Does anyone know much about 'atc_type' and 'atc_model' in aircraft.cfg?  I think it controls what they call the aircraft in ATC but I'm getting funny results when editing it

I have the westland merlin addon but they only call it '...type westland *gap*' in ATC, in aircraft.cfg I have these lines under '[General]'

atc_type = Westland
atc_model = Merlin

if I swap those over ATC then calls the chopper "...type merlin *gap*", so FSX has the ability to say both words, it just doesn't want to say them together

I checked other CFG files and the robinson R22 has:

atc_type=Robinson
atc_model=R22

but ATC refers to it as "...type Robinson R22 Helicopter", where does the 'helicopter' come from?

I've downloaded the Piaggio Avanti and aicraft.cfg has this:

atc_type = PIAGGIO
atc_model = P180

but ATC calls it "...type Piaggio Avanti", nowhere in the CFG does it have Avanti written down on it's own, so I don't get how FSX is working this out

is there some other file or some other part of the CFG where this is really supposed to be changed? or just something I'm missing? I know FSX has the ability to say most of these words but I think it's a bit choosy sometimes

IRML,

The short answer is that aircraft_model is entered as the ICAO code, not as the popular name.  For your Merlin, use SW2 as the aircraft_model.  The aircraft_type, Westland, is not on the list that I have.

This subject is one of the complexities of FS because most of us don't have a list of the codes.  However, the website below lists all Airlines, aircraft Types and Models for FS2002 and FS2004.  I expect FSX has the identical or a very similar list:

Hope this helps for the time being.

thanks a lot that just what I wanted, westland isn't on that list but they have added that in FSX because I was hearing the ATC voice say it earlier

my confusion was that merlin is on there as an aircraft manufacturer, so when I swapped things over I could hear them say it, but it was not the code that would work for atc_type

but now I understand how the system works so I'll be on the lookout for a way to see the codes used in FSX

thanks again
