Will more RAM make FSX run better

Postby fighter25 » Thu Apr 05, 2007 9:06 pm

Okay I'm getting a computer, and I can get one with 6 gigs of RAM, maybe a GeForce6600. Will this help at all, I mean all that RSM or is it just a waste?

I'm no hardware guru, but I think I can safely advise you to make that just 4GB of ram and a MUCH more powerful Video-card.

He's right.  FSX would never use up 6Gbs of RAM.  You could probably get away with even 2Gbs.  But If you can afford it, 4Gbs is about right, should you be preparing for future FS releases.

But a GeForce 6600 isn't going to help you much.  Your better off with a GeForce 7900 or better.  If you have a quad-core Intel CPU, you can go for GeForce 8800 GTX/GTS.

I have a 7900 and I don't see that it runs all that well. It runs, yes, but it's choppy. I upgraded from a 3200+ to a 3800+ and I don't think it helped much. I never did run it with the 3200 so I have no basis for comparison, but I really don't think the faster chip is having that much of an impact on how well Effessecks runs. I am waiting for the DX10 cards to come out. I'll upgrade again when they do. What I really need is a machine that is kept off the web and is kept free of the various nefarious bugs it picks up, given the sites I visit...
emachines T6212; AMD Athlon64 3800+ (2.40 GHz; Venice core); Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply; 2048Mb PC3200 DDR400; Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide-screen LCD monitor; eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO X16 PCIe video card; Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight controller;<

Ram helps but if you really want a boost get a quad core ;)

Wasn't FSX having trouble with dual and quad-core processors?

With the very greatest of respect you raised this identical question in another thread some two weeks ago and have already had several answers.  Maybe the memory is faltering slightly.  Or you missed reading the replies.

6gb of RAM with a 6600GT? LOL! Do NOT buy that.

If you want a good rig get a fast processor, a fast video card, 2gb of any DECENT memory, and a DECENT mobo. Why get 6gb of RAM when nothing uses it? Why pair it up with a slow 6600GT?

I'd aim at these for a MINIMUM:

Core 2 duo E6300
GIGABYTE 945 DS2
2x1gb DDR2-800
7900GS or 8600GT

Geforce 8 series chips have shader problems in fsX, so try to stay away from them. Although fsX dosn't use Dual Core much, I recomended a daul core anyway since the Core 2 duo also happens to be a very fast chip in single threaded apps.

Oh, and that's minimum if you plan on overclocking.....

FSX is CPU bound. The better CPU you can get the better your performance will be.

2GB is plenty. 4MB is overkill and I have read that it may even decrease your system performance if the RAM is set to the highest level the machine is designed for.

I have a dell XPS 700 with  C2D E6600 processor, 2GB of RAM and an nVidia 7900GS. FSX is great on this system.
