I think that you have to turn up the special effects detail. That may help.  8-)

If it affects the aircraft lights, try reinstalling the "Effects" folder.

I had the same problem and it worked for me.

I had a similar problem with one of the nvidia drivers.  The squares only show up when AA or AF was enabled I cant remember which one so it had to be set to application control.  So disable one of them test it and then disable the other and see if that works.
