Just how good is the scenery?

Postby rootbeer » Wed Feb 21, 2007 11:19 pm

Just how much better is the scenery in FS10 than in FS2004? I have the two-DVD set coming from FSGenesis covering all of North America. It's in 9.6-mt resolution.  Will I be amazed?
emachines T6212; AMD Athlon64 3800+ (2.40 GHz; Venice core); Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply; 2048Mb PC3200 DDR400; Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide-screen LCD monitor; eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO X16 PCIe video card; Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight controller;<

The scenery is lightyears ahead of fs9. However, some landclass is messed up, displaying way to much Desert in all countries. A few mods (Payware and freeware) fix this.
Here are some shots of default fsX. (ex. planes)

Autogen is amazing too:

I am not sure of the accuracy of the default USA mesh. I think it's 19 metres, but not sure.... fsG is coming out with even more accurate fsX mesh though...

I need all those extra things, miltest?!! Yikes, he said. It already takes my computer over 2-1/2 minutes to boot; I have 62 processes running in the background. If I add all that stuff, I can go wash the dishes and maybe it will be ready when I get done? I just want a higher level of accuracy in the scenery; I am not overly concerned about seeing the dynamic distressed hikers in the snow on Mt. Hood.

Maybe I am ignorant? Don't answer that! What's all this about mesh, scenery, landclass, et cetera? How much of it is really needed to have an enjoyable FS experience wrt what I see out the window? I know what may satisfy me may not satisfy you, but how much is really, really necessary? Thanks.

I am on the trigger to order a bigger video card, Daube. I must do it before 2/28 to get 30 bucks off. ctjoyce recommended it, so I have to follow his advice. It will be an eVGA GeForce 7600GT. He knows what's good...

Oh, those pics that were put up by Arnaage are very good. I like the detail in the mountains in the background. That's kind of what I'm looking to get in my scenery/mesh/landclass/hot pastrami sandwich...

If your PC needs two minutes to boot and if you've got 62 background processes (I've got 21 - 18 when simming), you're doing something fundamentally wrong.

Catch up on all the PC tweaking stuff in here and on the internet, optimize your PC and then go complain about a slow PC.

About the scenery: The only thing you need for FSX is a landclass. Nothing more. Why order some extra mesh if FSX's default one is accurate enough? As far as I know, it displays the USA in 38.8m resolution, which is already extremely good.
Spending money on an add-on mesh which improves little to nothing is plain stupid.

- Edit: Plus, it *will* slow down you FSX, since it has to divert CPU power to two meshes instead of one.

Agreed on the processes and cleanup, disagree on the mesh

First, the sim automatically locates the highest res mesh files (based on the slider level set in FSX) and will load them and not the matching low res, at all. That function has been the same since FS8-9. I do agree that mesh does not change the textures or the autogen layouts or landclass however when I fly VFR I want to be able to see hills and valleys as I do in a real aircraft. The default mesh at 38m is good, but it is not accurate enough for me. As for his long load times, yes they will increase with the high res mesh but that issue is easily fixed by properly defragmenting with the right defrag program and also cleaning up the start system... and placing the line in the FSX.cfg file that will tell the sim to NOT load the default flight. Load times will be cut in half or more if the system is correctly set up and defragged (a COMPLETE/NAME defrag with O&O Defrag pro does the job perfectly) Long load times indicates his system is not set up and defragmented correctly.

rootbear.. mesh is just that, a wire frame of the location (or world) which defines how accurate the terrain is in layout and elevation to the real world. 38m is accurate to aprox 125 feet where 10m is accurate to aprox 36-40 feet. There is no such thing as perfect and with FSX the possibility of having someone produce a 1m or less accurate mesh is very possible.

Ever heard of buffer meshes?

Those things will smooth the transitions of the high-res mesh to low-res mesh and give a less detailed, yet better representation of distant mountains & peaks in the distance.
Since FSX has a 76m mesh by default, those buffer meshes are not really necessary anymore.

Absolutely, buffer mesh is essential to FS9 to fill in the gaps however in FSX it is not needed, (as much but is still used in some areas) however... even in FS9 the sim will only load the buffer mesh in areas the range is defined by the sim. In example, it does not load the entire United States -and the entire world

Takes my computer 30 seconds to boot, with 16 processes. If you have 62, something must be wrong with your computer. If I had 62 processes, I would format. Huge amounts of background processes waste system recources and waste memory.

Wow! What location is that screenshot? I wouldn't mind flying there.

It's a lake to the south west of Jackson Hole (KJAC).
