Mip Mapping Aeroplanes.

Postby Fly2e » Thu Sep 28, 2006 11:43 am

For any of those who are familiar with the process of mip-mapping your aircraft in FS9, I have heard that there will be no need for this in FSX. Even though there is backward capability with aircraft, the FSX newer aircraft will be mip mapped when creating, repainting or developing.

The reason I say this is that the CFS3 aircraft seem to all be mip mapped. It is part of the process I would assume when the new CFS3 engine was developed. The detail on the default CFS3 aircraft is far superior than the default FS9 aircraft. You can see from my shots.

I guess what I am saying is that I mip map every aircraft I download. The FSX aircraft and future repaints will NOT need to be mip mapped because of the newer version.

Can anybody confirm this?

well the CFS3 planes and FSX planes have the same type of texturing it seems, Officially confirm it, I cant. But I came to that conclusion my 3rd or 4th time flying with the demo of FSX! It would be nice to confirm this though.... Cheers, Gunny

The textures must be like 2x2,4x4,8x8,16x16,32x32,64x64,128x128,256x256,512x512,1024x1024,2048x2048, etc..............

I sometimes find that aircraft with MIPs cause blurry textures unless you zoom in on them and then away. I like Alrot have always unticked the 'include mip-maps' on saving to eliminate this problem.

However I never get the blurry issue on CFS3??
AMD64 3500+ @ 2200MHz 400FSB

That is due to your system trying to render the textures. The reason they are blurry is because of this. Usually if you toggle your views a few times, they will load.

Mip Mapping is a texture mapping technique that uses multiple texture maps, or MIP maps. Each MIP map is half the size of the first one, providing several texture maps for various levels of depth. MIP mapping is combined with various other techniques to produce different amounts of realism. It is typically used with bilinear interpolation and always used with trilinear interpolation. MIP stands for "multum in parvo," which is Latin for "many in a small place."

I mip map all my textures, airplane & scenery. It takes a while but the detail is there. Like I said, The textures in the CFS3 engine are different and I have heard there will be no need for mipmapping anything. Just was wondering if anybody knew about this...

Alrot, many designers do not do this step. By mip mapping your texture you are creating "more" textures to render thus maybe making an aircraft heavy on a low end system. It depends on what you want to create...

It's now generally agreed I think that you REMOVE mip-maps from aircraft textures if you want superior performance and texture quality.

Look at it this way. In spot view, how far do you get from your aircraft? Not very far - and not far enough for mip-mapping to have any effect.

There is one exception to this - AI aircraft. Now those you do view from a distance. No mip-maps on AI does give you better FR especially if you have a whole bunch in view on your screen. However, the ones further away will appear all white which will upset a few folks I'm sure.
