FSX/P3D Alpha Saab Gripen Revisited - It keeps crashing FSX

Postby brntwrmn » Fri Dec 27, 2024 2:46 pm

Hello - I recently downloaded the "FSX/P3D Alpha Saab Gripen Revisited". I followed the instructions for installing it in FSX, but when I attempted to run the aircraft it crashed FSX. Am I missing a step somewhere? Thank you in advance.

The following worked for me:

Open whichever panel.cfg you've chosen with a text editor.
In the [Vcockpit01] section replace the line:
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3, 668,78,296,362

with:
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3__Orig, 668,78,296,362

It seems the following also work:
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3__LKG, 668,78,296,362
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3__LKG2, 668,78,296,362

Hope it helps

You need to change that line to be same as other 2 MFDG entries by adding "ALPHA_Gripen" MFDG3.... My problem is that the panel with the select icons is black, icons are there but can't see them...?

Hi,
To all experienced who did experience a problem with crashing FSX or P3D I'm sorry for that problem.
I will investigate once more the package both in P3Dv4, P3Dv3 and FSX SP2.
In the mean time serbir did post his solution fix for a possible crash.
If that fix solves the crash problem please post if that fix was successful to you.
In the mean time thank you and happy flights.

Hi,
The fix I suggested on Dec 28, 2024 is more of a work around than a real solution to the problem.
Indeed if we compare the contents of MFDG3__Orig.xml, inside the MFDG folder, with MFDG3.xml inside Alpha_Gripen.cab cabinet file we'll find out
they are exactly the same.

So writing in the panel.cfg file:
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3__Orig, 668,78,296,362
or
gauge02=Alpha_Gripen!MFDG3, 668,78,296,362
gives us exactly the same net result.

But this the original Alpha/Virtavia gauge so we don't get any extra features, and this misses the whole point of Flanker256's post.

In fact the right hand side multifunction gauge contains an extra page whose functionality is executed by the code in MFDG3.xml file.
This extra screen is displayed when we press the 2nd. from top right hand side button in the mentioned gauge:

Image

Some of the fields simply display the values of certain simulation variables while others are clickable and change the simulator's behaviour like
Sim Rate, DME Sound, Park Brake and so forth.
Pressing the button again brings us back to the previous screen.

It appears that FSX doesn't like the original syntax of MFDG3.xml so it keeps closing when we try to load the aircraft.

I changed the syntax of MFDG3.xml and packed it in a cabinet file, MFDG.cab, which I published on January the 18th.
The gauge line in the panel.cfg has to be restored to its original form:
gauge02=MFDG!MFDG3, 668,78,296,362

I checked the solution in both FSXA and P3D v5.3 and both behave the same. So far there have been 90 downloads
and no complaints so I guess the fix is correct.

The link to the fix can be found in the original Flanker256 post.

Thanks Flanker... works well now that I have activated the "panel_FXS.cfg". Nice airplane, hard to land from the VC though... Cheers to all you simmers out there!

Hi RamblinRick,

Thank you.

I do not experience difficult landings from VC.
Remember the speeds and Z key to disable Autopilot during landings.
At landing weight of 20,000lbs, approach speed should be 135kts.
Good luck.

BTW: Soon I will post a FSX specific update for the ALPHA Gripen.

Hi dear pilots,

It turned out I did NOT test the ALPHA Gripen aircraft in FSX SP2 with my modifications.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
When testing the Gripen in FSX SP2 I stumbled upon several bugs.
Below is the list with new fixes for these bugs.

• MFDG3.xml was crashing upon loading aircraft in FSX. sebir did provide a fix.
The MFDG3.xml by sebir solves the FSX crash but lacks FuelDump and Engine Fire messages.
Created is a new MFDG3.xml based upon the one provided by sebir (thank you sevur !) and now
FuelDump and Engine Fire messages are displayed in the ENG tab of MFDG3 as intended.
• Fixed the lack of CockpitSounds in VC for FSX panel.
• Fixed code Fuel Probe switch in VC for FSX panel.
• Fixed Fuel Dump process by changing parameters in file aircraft.cfg and
by creating a new FuelDump__FSX.xml file with FSX SP2 tailored code.
• Added better VC CameraDefintions by changing parameters in [CameraDefitions] keys in
file aircraft.cfg for use in FSX.
• Fixed and streamlined automatic Afterburner effect.

I will post these FSX specific updates soon but I'm still testing some stuff.
In the mean time stay safe and have happy flights.
