Windows 10 Updates

Postby Shadowcaster » Sun Dec 11, 2016 6:45 am

Just a word of warning, yesterday my computer did some updates, did not think to much about it. Today I loaded FSX and the frame rate had gone from 25/30 fps to 8/10 fps, anyway long story short the culprit was one of the updates namely KB3201845 I uninstalled it at now all is well.

Cheers

Thanks, Rich. I checked with P3d running, and the FPS has dropped tremendously. Uninstalling.

That brought it back most of the way. Things change over time, FPS go up and down. But it's closer to what I remember it being.

Anyway, I got a nice screen shot out of it. :D

If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.

Thanks, guys. Actually, when I took off I noticed that the clouds were looking pretty good, so I started panning around and saw the moon.

About the moon
My moon is the mid-sized selection from HD Moon Texture v3.0. I thought that Simviation had that download, but the closest thing that I see is HD Moon Textures. I've never tried that one.

There is a copy over at AVSIM - HD Moon Texture v3.0.

Thanks, B0ikat, I'd missed that one.

That one is an improvement over the original FSX Moon set of 64x64, but is a lower resolution than the one that I use - 1024x1024.

The one from AVSIM, and elsewhere, has three sizes.

According to the HD V3 text doc;
default = 64x64
better = 512x512
even better = 1024x1024
highest resolution = 2048x2048

My video card could probably handle the 2048x2048 resolution, but I think that it looks good enough at 1024x1024.

UPDATE

Thinking about it, that moon doesn't look quite right, so I checked my "moon" textures, and they've gone back to the default.

Here it is reloaded.

Later I may try the higher resolution and see what, if any, effect it may have on my FPS.

Hi Alain, if you have Windows 10 Home edition then you can't stop it from updating, with other versions like Enterprise and Pro you can defer updates until a later date. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windo ... l-3626701/

It would appear that FSX is not the only victim of KB3201845 https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100 ... Pwx92l2OMY hopefully MS will correct the issues, but don't hold your breath.

Cheers

And another word of warning: :evil:

Maybe about 6 months ago, the sound on my FSX PC went dead. No amount of checking, cross checking, driver updates OR ANYTHING could get it to work again.
(Sound on my system is Asus 7.1 Xonar surround sound on PCI slot. Tested the card in another machine and it is fine.)

In the end I concluded that it must be hardware related, that the something on the mobo must have blown.
Having a spare machine with a very similar Asus mobo, I went ahead and swopped the mobo's from one machine to the other.

After a good couple of hours, I got the MAIN PC set up and working once again with sound for FSX, and relegated the other PC for browsing with no sound.

Then, lo and behold, I accidently come across an article on line, stating that one of the Windows updates were "breaking" some peoples sound systems, stopping it from working,
AND, that a bug fix was included in some subsequent updates.

Well you guessed it. Having read this I promptly went checking the spare machine, and there it is ..Working in all its glory. Some later update must have "fixed" it.

Well I'm glad to have come across this article, but it caused me a lot of stress and disappointment, thinking that my PC is bust, not to mention all the work to swop and set-up two mobos'.

For what its worth,
Jan

If you set your internet connection as “metered”, Win 10 will not download any more crap. I did this at an early stage and have not been pestered with unwanted updates since. If you have already downloaded it, you will have to delete it or Win 10 will keep trying to install it.

Please excuse me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs; it just appeared from your posts that you might not be aware of it.
