how is new scenery stored?

Postby KEVBELL1947 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 11:48 am

I am new to add on scenery into the steam version of FSX but have had mixed results. I have managed to add scenery where the BGL files are added directly into the main scenery file but have had no luck when trying to add to the addon scenery folder. I have added the required scenery and texture files but these do not show up when flying, even after I add them using the add scenery facility. Can someone please explain the difference between the main scenery file and the addon scenery file? For instance do both these files operate in the same manner or must the addon scenery file be manually loaded when required? How can the scenery priority be organised for files added directly into the main library, or is this done automatically when that particular area is flown over?
I hope this makes sense(!) Any help would be greatly appreciated

When it comes to adding scenery you have to go about it in a certain way. If you look at any of the scenery on your system you will notice that there can be three folders
The main folder like Florida than when you open up the Florida folder you might see two other folders one called SCENERY and the other if there is TEXTURES
Some people when adding scenery like to give a meaningful name to it like Florida now you can put this folder just about anywhere but the best place is either in the main scenery folder or the ADDON SCENERY folder Most people prefer to use the addon scenery so they can keep the new scenery separate from the default scenery.
If you put it in the addon scenery and there was nothing there to start with you will have to make the Folders that I was talking about.
BGL files will go into the Scenery folder any other type file that might be there will go into the TEXTURE folder like BMP file short for BIT MAP.
Once you have every thing in place you can start up FSX and go to the add new scenery menu Than all you have to do is to point where the new scenery is at which in this case would be in this order ADDON SCENERY;FLORIDA: and that should do it
I have to warn you that FSX wil add put new scenery at the top of the list and this could cause strange things to happen so you might have to move it to the bottom
This will depend if your default scenery will interfere with it.
Once you have added make sure to check it out to see if there is a problem you might see things like an aircraft in the middle of a hanger or trees on the runway or VORS on the runway
I had that happen once. It was odd to say the least seeing a VOR in the middle of the runway
Just in case VOR is short for VECTOR OMNI RANGE this is a navigation aide
you can look at the link below and it might help you as well This si a sticky in the FSX page
