Windows automatic updates

Postby Dave T » Sun Aug 21, 2016 3:49 am

A few days ago Fsx started to take 10 to 15minutes to load terrain data and start the flight which became rather annoying. I did the usual things backed off all the sliders in settings unchecked all extra addon scenery used back up cfg nothing worked. I checked CPU usage with FSX running and it was at 100%, I had noticed that around this time of the month fsx had slowed down and checked processes running which seemed ok, anyway the bottle neck turned out to be Windows automatic updates which was hogging the system, I don't know why windows needs so much of the resources for updating. Windows finally updated 7parts and then 2 more parts and now everything is back to normal reinstated everything setting back to original settings load times from clicking fsx icon to being at the airport just over 60 seconds and Cpu usage with fsx running 15 to 20%. I'm happy again and going to disable automatic updates for windows and do it manually.

Right on! The problem is that there are some updates that you cannot control; particularly driver updates which can seriously mess up your system.

The bottom line is...................
Microsoft sucks!

if you have a really good AV/firewall programme (I use emsisoft) it is possible to block the automatic part of windows update by denying it internet acess. Probably breaks the end user licence agreement of win 10 but it does give you back ownership of your pc

Thanks for the replies I use Kaspersky which doesn't conflict with FSX, using W7 64 and FSX is back to normal, tried W8 didn't like the interface and ignored the w10 free upgrade. I tried w10 and didn't like it on another computer and went back to W7.

For all those, like me, who never like(d) the default Windows display of the desktop, files, folders, etc, etc, and remember the simplicity of Windows '98 and Windows XP; "Classic Shell" is the way to go!

http://www.classicshell.net/

It replaces the Windows Start Button with the familiar start button from the Olden Days, and gives you access to all the classic file and folder displays which we remember so well from the past!

An occasion when Older is Better!.... ....!

Paul...(the classic version).... ;) ...!

P.S...I'm using Windows 8.1, and Classic Shell.
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

Fozzer's idea about the use of the classic shell is a great idea and works with no problems. I would be the first person that would say that when I first upgraded to windows 10 boy did I ever regret that mistake. AS usual Microsoft released it before it was truly ready. It had more bugs than an old hotel. But after the big fix in November 98% of the problems went away finally.
I can understand a person not wanting to update there current system as you are not sure of old programs that you may have and will they still run. I only stopped using 1 program and that was because it was just outdated and the graphics were the pits. But it would still run without having to run as windows 8 option. That was the old Microsoft Train simulator.
I got spoiled after updating to TANE Train Simulator A New Experience. The graphics in this program are truly great
But Microsoft has everyone between a rock and a hard place because Windows 10 is the operating system of the future and Microsoft will stop supporting any other versions of windows. It is just a matter of time when this will happen. Of course that does not mean you have to change it just means that there will be no more fixes released for it and after time the system will become vulnerable to attack.
I no for a fact there there are still people using windows XP and even older systems than that. The problem is any new software will not run using those older systems. and it is just a matter of time before new programs will not run under anything other than Windows 10

Gary; Did all of your aircraft, freeware scenery transfer without a total reinstall? That's my greatest fear?

My experience with Windows 10 has been good. Everything I need, yes, everything, runs as it should, with the exception of a very old 1994 Kodak copier-printer utility that's dotNet based and, of course, some old 16-bit programs that could still run on Win7.

The other big problem for the tinfoil hatters who want to stay on old software forever is this: Only Windows 10 will be compatible with the latest cpu's:

From anandtech.com:

MICROSOFT WILL NOT SUPPORT UPCOMING PROCESSORS EXCEPT ON WINDOWS 10

"This does not just affect Intel based machines either. According to the blog post by Terry Myerson, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform for Kaby Lake (Intel’s next gen 14 nm processors), Snapdragon 820 (Qualcomm), and Carrizo (AMD)."
