FSX on second drive

Postby lancer24 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 8:09 pm

Hi, I just got my computer back from the shop and have a new second hard drive. I wanted to install FSX onto this new hard drive so I would have a dedicated FSX drive just for all my FSX things. Upon trying to install FSX to the second hard drive I encountered the message that I can not install FSX to the root of the drive. Is there any way that I can be able to install FSX to a second drive? I am not sure of the procedures to use. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Its just a thought....

...but if its a new Hard Drive plugged in, doesn't it have to be "Formatted", to set up the directory, before programs can be installed upon it?

I'm pretty sure that I had to do that with all my additional Hard Drives in the past!

My present Hard Drive in my Tower Computer is so massive, terra-bytes, that I don't have to do that any more!...

You cant install FSX to a root directory on any drive, you need to install it to (drive letter)/FSX/
So just make a new directory on your new drive and install it to that.

Hi, OK thanks. I will give setting it up like D:/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator a try.

If it's not too late do it this way:

D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

That way, if any installers want to install FSX stuff to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X, all you have to do is to change one letter.

Also the folder name "Program Files (x86)" on any other drive doesn't have the restrictions that Program Files (x86) has on the C: drive.

Hi, it worked!! FSX installed on the D drive without problems. And if I am not mistaken, it appears to run a little more smoother than it was when installed on C drive. Thanks very much for the help.

A yup. The operating system is the system that operates your computer. While you're trying to fly, it's doing "paper work".

Most systems today have absolutely no problem accessing two, or more, drives on separate cables at nearly the same time.

So while your C: drive is doing it's thing, it can access the FSX data quicker.

None of this STOP, ACCESS THAT, STOP, WRITE THIS, STOP, THEN THAT, STOP, READ THIS, STOP, WRITE SOMETHING ELSE, STOP....

You'll find that even at the same FPS, the sim is smother when it's on another drive.
