Having problems with some Simviation FSX downloads

Postby G8tr » Fri Apr 29, 2016 12:37 pm

New to Simviation and really pleased with the downloads that seem to be available. Having a problem though with getting some of the downloads to work. Some of them don't show up in my "Aircraft" hangar. The ones that don't seem to show up have a file name format I'm unfamiliar with. Here's an example: "787AirforceFSXeffectstdsb8_wing_light.fx". (There are dots in between where there are spaces here.) I'm familiar with the AC files that are normally already loaded into their respective folders , such as "Panel", "Model", etc. These files that are not loaded into their folders, but seem to have folder names within the file name are a bit confusing to me, especially since they aren't separated by the normal slash. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here though. What do I need to do? Any suggestions appreciated. Glad to be a part of Simviation!

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Can you please be specific about what file(s) you are having a problem with? (filename or page of the file)

Thanks

I presume this is the file --> http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=787AirforceFSX.zip&categoryId=&filename=Y
It's the only Air Force 787 I can find.

Without downloading it I can't offer any advice but on a quick check of the file preview it all looks normal to me. http://simviation.com/1/preview-popup?fileId=45218

Here's a sample of what the files look like on my PC:

I am new to Simviation, but have been downloading AC for many years through Flightsim and AVSIM. The file names for these are throwing me a little. Kind of curious what I am missing. Thanks.

Something odd here. It should extract into folders like conventional downloads. Which software & method are you using to extract zipfiles? Also, which OS are you using?

I'm downloading the file now to check it out.

Assuming the files are all named ok then, any thoughts on why only these don't show up? Others from SV (with the folders physically present) show up just fine. I've read the "Readme"s from them all and, to the best of my knowledge, have installed them accordingly. Do the .cfg files need to be tweaked? Open to any thoughts. Otherwise I'll have to delete them and try a new install.

You haven't answered my questions. :P
I'll be able to tell you more after I've downloaded the file & checked it out myself.

All freeware downloads vary to some extent but files posted here at Simviation are no different from those posted on other popular FS download sites. In fact some of them were uploaded here first.

I use a MacBook Pro and run FSX in Bootcamp. Since I spend most of my browsing time in Safari, I download to my external memory. Then I go in to my Bootcamp side and use Win 7/64 (Explorer) to pull the files into my FS folders. Been using this combination for years, and it worked on 75% of the recent SV downloads as well.

I use a MacBook Pro

I have no knowledge of Mac but I suspect that is the cause of your problems. These won't only be confined to files downloaded from Simviation.

This is how the downloaded file looks for me in Windows 10 File Explorer which is basically no different from Win7. Note that the files are configured into the familiar folders without which it cannot possibly be recognised in FS. The indivdual files are in standard FS format.

Here it is in FSX.

As I said earlier, all freeware downloads vary to some extent & the way files are configured depends on the experience & preference of the author. In the case of files configured like this one I can only suggest that you need software capable of of extracting zipped files into folders. Perhaps another member experienced with Mac can help you further.

I appreciate your time and help. I'm downloading again, but this time directly into my Bootcamp using Win7. We'll see how that works. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

The aircraft in question is a problem free complete model and should present no problem whatsoever.

I think Izarc is compatible with Apple stuff too ... check it out

http://www.izarc.org/

Izarc is a zip/unzip utility - and the only one I use having checked them all. Once installed just right click -- extract to -- and extract to a temp folder (not directly into FSX!!) then simply move the correct folder (containing mode/panel/sound/texture/aircraft.cfg & .air files) into the /simobjects/airplanes folder on FSX

Simple. It takes seconds and should be no more difficult on a mac.

If you're still having trouble see this

That looks like it should work flawlessly if its done exactly correctly each time.
Your example does appear to just be a faulty install.

Your decision to do another fresh install is probably the best one. Good luck with this and I hope you are cruising the airways in that Boeing soon.

The files work as advertised now that I was more careful to extract them right. Thanks for the advice! G8tr
