FSX aircraft textures

Postby Alex1968 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 9:15 am

Greetings everyone, new young pilot here (but old in age)

I tried to browse among all textures available on this site, but they are many and I am a bit lost.

I own MFSX Deluxe, can you suggest me please the best working texture (only) for ALITALIA civil jets (737-800, 747-400, A321)?

Thank's in advance & good flights!!

Alex

Hi Alex. This forum has the reputation of being helpful & friendly. Like most people here I only answer questions if I think I can help. I can't help on this occasion. Sorry.

Hi Alex - Seems a better solution to try them yourself? - especially as you haven't been specific about what aircraft you wish to add them to. Just so many variables and options in your question.

Search and you will find :) - In most of the files you can zip preview and see a larger image to give you an idea of what they are like.

Did you use the search feature of the download page? There is a A321 texture for Alitalia available.

You could do a search for that carrier and pick one that you take interest in. Your wording using Textures when I see more full aircraft than textures when I scan through them. There are a few mass texture files for those default planes and not knowing if ALITALIA is actually covered in them to be honest.
I myself would be looking for other than the defaults when many planes on this site are nice, you may even find one of my favorites a Boeing 777-200 or even a 300 for that carrier.
Check them out and see how they fly, some of the flight mechanics seem to be spot on, use the air file if it is a match, replace the air file of one that does not fly so well.
Here is a search for that carrier you were looking for.

I don't usually fly jet airliners but if I understand your question correctly I might be able to help after all.
I checked out the following Alitalia repaints for the FSX default 737-800, 747-400 & A321.

This is what they look like in FSX

Hi Alex,

I've recently come back to flight sims & now running FSX as well. Adding 3rd. party repaints to stock FSX is not that difficult, actually a bit easier than it was in previous editions of Microsoft FS. Just download & unpack to a directory you should make for FS downloads (I have several sub-directories for cockpit panels, engine sounds, etc.). Once unpacked, place in the appropriate simobjects\airplanes then look for the specific aircraft your adding subdirectory (kinda long path for me because I run FSX through Steam - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\a321 - for example). For repaints of a stock aircraft all you need is a texture file and updated aircraft cfg. file that is usually included with the download. Once you cut/paste or drag/drop the texture (needs unique name.. ie - texture.alitalia) on the list with the other textures cut/paste the included aircraft.cfg entry onto the existing stock FSX aircraft.cfg (using notepad) at the end of the current list of specific liveries. Each (livery) texture start with the #0 then 1, 2 and so forth. The included downloads will come (usually) with a aircraft.cfg that has x for a texture #. You need to change the x to whatever the next # on the list of the aircraft.cfg you are adding to. In the rare case a texture does not come with a aircraft.cfg you can make your own easy enough by cutting/pasting another aircraft.cfg entry that is on the desired list & change the title, the name of the texture and # to the one you are adding and place at the end of the aircraft texture list for a particular model.

As has been found by others there are repaints your looking for but Alitalia didn't fly the 747-400 or the 737-800 (I looked.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alitalia) not that it matters.. My prudish nature I only want aircraft a particular carrier actually flies or flew previously. If you merely type in alitalia in the Simaviation search bar you get pages of aircraft Alitalia currently fly and those they have in the past. Most of these are complete aircraft, meaning that you can download the aircraft & all you have to do is once unpacked add to the ...\simobjects\airplanes list. Though many of these aircraft will default to sound or panel files of stock FSX aircraft some come with their own unique ones. Many aircraft you add you'll also have to amend other FSX files (sound, effects, etc.) for them to work right, no worries these download almost always come with directions how to place them in FS correctly. Unpacking beforehand helps prevent problems and be careful where you put things. For example in the FSX\effects sub directory there is a sub-sub directory called texture (ie FSX\effects\texture). Some aircraft you download will have to move additional files to both the effects sub-directory and the texture sub-sub directory it contains within.

For Airbus you can't go wrong with Project Airbus files, http://www.pafs.wf/downloads and Project Opensky has a wide variety of other models http://poskyarchive.com/ which though designed for previous models of FS can be made to work with FSX with many of these are available here on Simaviation without going to those other sites. For additional aircraft just check the description of aircraft you might be interested in on the Simaviation search list. One thing to remember is you cannot mix models from different developers on your aircraft list. Some aircraft of slightly different makes from the same developer can be in the same directory say if they have different models of the same aircraft, usually reading the directions for particular downloads clarifies where things have to go. This is the case with aircraft from Project Opensky aircraft. One last note when adding aircraft. Merely adding a new texture & updating the .cfg file is all you need when adding to stock FSX is to switch to another type of aircraft and switch back for the additional livery to appear. If you add entirely new aircraft with new sounds & panels you may have to close & restart FSX for an aircraft to appear & work correctly..

Long answer to a short question.. - hope I didn't confuse you too much - gl/tc..!

At first, excuse me guys if I have been polemical and a bit rude :shifty:

Of course I have used the search engine of this site to sort out what I was looking for, but I was confused anyway.

Thank you very much for all your hints and explainations: they are very useful and really more than I expected. I will keep treasure of all your suggestions. Once I get familiar with the files in FSX folders, I think I will try to actively contribute and upload some add-ons too.

Wish you all good flights! :D

P.S.: For some reason my first account does not work anymore (my fault I am sure), so I had to create a new one.

No worries from me Alex.. FS's like FSX are a bit different than most software. The base version is fine, but as we both have learned there is a lot of stuff out there to make it better. Though many games I play I end up adding 3rd. party mods., FSX you can take this to an extreme due to that there is so much material done outside of official circles to enhance the 'game'. The standards of 3rd. party add-ons are not uniform, all skill levels of developers.. I knew I was in trouble when I found myself watching a kid on YouTube (under the age of 10) working in FSX moving flies around that I had trouble with.. I didn't learn to much from him, but the kid did help.. I've done some limited computer programming in my day, but even I get intimidated/frustrated trying to get things to work in FSX ??? . I could spend a lot of time asking questions what my 'user' error is. Not that I'm crazy with detective work it's what I end up doing a lot & end up learning from my (numerous) mistakes. Though a surprising amount of old material is usable in newer versions of FS, getting them to work right can be a bit of a challenge.. & even a bit dangerous because to make some 3rd. party things to work in FSX for you sometimes have to mess with system (hidden) files. Saving base files sometimes isn't always enough.. I've reloaded FSX twice already to start from scratch, but as long as I don't crash my computer entirely I won't get too mad.. There is an old carpentry saying 'measure twice, cut once..' the same applies in FS's. Read the directions (twice) before you do anything and be very care what you cut..

I hear you Highfive :D

I started working on some aircraft textures I want to modify and I suddenly realized how hard it can be.

Not only: attracted by the idea of having passengers on my flights, I have purchased FSpassengersX, which is supposed to be a 3rd party addon. It doesn't work at all... or better, it doesn't even install neither on my PC, nor on other PCs I've tried. So, your suggestion of being very careful about what we add to our FSX is more than true.

Do not feel to bad.
I thought I would try to create my own airplanes. I had some experience with C A D Computer Aided Design so I thought I might be able to do this. I went out and bought a program called GMAX
Which at that time was considered the best 3D software out there and with it you could design and animate 3D aircraft It even came with 2 tutorials one for making a small building and another for making a P38. After a lot of struggling I managed to create a Small building and installed it in FS2004 I used it as a line shack at my home base KJAX. But making the P38 was a night-mere.
I nearly went bald trying to make this aircraft no matter what I did I could not get the program to do what the tutorial wanted to do. I finally gave up and to this day never tried again. I now really appreciate those who are able to do this. they make it look so easy. But trust me it is not a easy task.
Anyone that can master GMAX I will take my hat off to. <<q
