FSX and Dovetail

Another interesting post about Dovetail and FSX
It seems they are going the way of "Steam"......
"Dovetail Games announced that they have acquired the rights to develop and publish products based on Microsoft’s flight simulation technology, and that they will be bringing Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition to market later this year.

Hmmmmm.........

I think the experience of 'Flight' and that microsoft dropped FS series has certainly made ME sceptical of what might be around the corner.

Let's just wait 'n see. If it's a way to try to squeeze cash out of us I will give them a wide berth

Anyhow I'm quite happy with FSX as it is and the road ahead just from this site alone. I haven't even explored 2% of what's available.

Same here! Let's wait to see what they come up with THEN I'll get my knickers in a knot over it.
It would certainly be nice to see something "New & Improved" though.

It's quite simple in fact.

For FSX, it means only good stuff. The fact that it's ported to Steam means that it will FINALLY be easy to install and uninstall and reinstall, without any quirks. You won't need to worry about stuff you forgot to delete or stuff in the registry or anything like that. It will be smooth, one click stuff like any game on Steam. Don't expect any other bug fixes or optimizations in the game though. That's not what "porting on Steam" means. If I would still be flying FSX, I would strach, hammer (or with a stone or something) and burn the original DVDs and buy the Steam version as soon as it gets available.

For the next opus of the Flight Simulator franchise, nobody has any idea about what is going to happen (if it happens at all). I'm not sure if they learned anything for the catastrophic MS Flight strategies. I'm not even sure if they are targetting that market at all.

Finally, the successor of FSX is P3D. It's going to be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT (if not impossible) for a company like Dovetail to build a product that could attract the current 3rd party addon makers. And without them, the game is DEAD. Like MS Flight.

I would be very cautious about Steam. It is a complete embuggerance for offline use, so don't trash you original DVDs, you will want to go back to them, just set up a clear and concise external hard drive backup policy for all of your addons and original clean install files. I have a number of Steam sponsored games and I passionately yearn back for the "good old days" when you had control over where and when you installed programs, and the freedom of stand-alone rigs that do not need a constant internet connection, and thus a portal for malware, physhing, and junk mail.

Until the shoe drops we won't know anything for sure. FSX has its limitations but for all gaming purposes is adequate enough. Once a fellow has enough (and I have dl'd plenty) of quality aircraft then the jacking up the scenery becomes the next hurdle. Xplane has a scenery thread that runs on the fly as you travel from one grid to the next. That, I suspect will be what Dovetail has up its sleeve. This is merely speculation on my part mind you but seems to be the logical speed bump on the horizon.... we shall see.

One thing I've noticed with Steam is the unusual situation they have with 777 Studios and "Rise Of Flight". If you buy the game through one source (777 Studios or Steam) there is a compatibility issue. The addons you buy through 777 Studios aren't compatible with the Steam version and vice versa. I wonder if there will be issues along that line with FSX and Dovetail?

Stay tuned Ladies & Gentlemen!

This is obviously a business decision by Microsoft to let Dovetail/Steam handle the distribution/queries/etc of a 6-7 year old game that has been long discontinued. MS$ saves on distribution costs (local & worldwide)

I think this is a great spin to create interest on a discontinued product.

How will it affect those that still have FSX? Of course it will not affect them at all.
P3D, as we all know, is vastly superior to FSX, with the right hardware. No debate about that.
For those nay sayers that complain about compatibility issues of P3D & FSX stuff..... Remember the move from FS9 to FSX? Same compatibilty issues.. P3D is a completely new version if compared to FSX.

I agree with Daube, porting to Steam is only selling "FSX as it is". This can attract new simmers but not FSX users.

P3D has shown the way to improve FSX, but not without difficulties, every two months an update.

Is Dovetail wanting and/or is able to improve FSX?. I think not.

I've been using FSX boxed edition for some time now. My only issue is that it has started crashing, with a "Fatal Error" notice, and no explanation. I just started with my newly-installed Steam and FSX Steam edition, and the graphics are phenom. However, my Switch and Multi Panels do not work, and that is frustrating, as I enjoy using both units. I've downloaded and installed both FSUIPC4 and SPAD, and they still don't respond. Yeah, I've disconnected and reconned them, too. Any ideas? Thx

Get rid of spad. My friend did that and his panels work perfect. Better than with box edition.
And my se version is running flawless and better than any box edition install I ever had. All of my addons installed perfectly and I see that the vendors are all starting to make their installers se friendly. Its easier to install, no discs or serials OR connection issues when on mp. Vpilot and Vatsim work flawless, the list goes on. Voice com's are enabled within mp. You can jump right in to an ATC server and have fun without having to spend hours programming a flight plan, filing it with a Vatsim controller, and actually ask a question without being told to be quiet.
They guys that got it for $5.00 got the steal of all flightsims.
You guys know you don't have to buy content from DT don't you? You know there are plenty of places to get add on content, right? So there is no fear of "getting money" from you. One time purchase.
And they ARE fixing bugs and issues. Go read the latest change log. They made several changes to the .cfg that we have all been tweaking over the years.
As well as responding to forums with information on a daily basis. Wheredo you find that with the box edition?
The box edition is a dead platform from a developers perspective. Period. End of story.

What you really want to watch for is the high probability of "Flight" returning. Which is a much improved graphic version of fsx. We all know the failure of flight, but should DT develop it with input from the consumer, as they are currently doing with fax, we will have a sim that is better than fax graphically, ability to run DX higher than dx9 without fooling the sim, and supported development. Keep your ears to the ground on this one.

Yeah, but you have to dodge the kids in their F-18s. FSOpen is still a lot more tame, and there are more sessions than on Steam, too. I try to fly SE m/p, but I can never find a server that isn't overrun with helis spawning on taxiways and jets flying thru buildings.

Here at simviation. I paid $5 for SE. I still have high hopes for the m/p, and hell, it was $5. SDK comps would help me convert over, I can't run IS3, and without it, I won't abandon the box set.

where have I heard that before, "FSX is dead."?

Its hard to vomit with my ear pressed to the ground. Guess i'll be sticking with my dead boxed set and this frankensteined FSX:SE. Man, all of a sudden I REAlly REALLY want to reinstall FS9/GW3.

If READ my post you'll see that it says that FSX from MS is dead for "development". Meaning that MS is not developing the platform any further. You know what I meant,,, didnt you? You're just looking to flame.

If you can't find a decent MP on SE then you just don't know what you're doing. Ever hear of passwords? Perhaps you've heard of VA's and Teamspeak? If you were to use those tools along with Google or just some basic visual techniques like looking AT the server description on se, then going to their respective website you might succeed. But thats probably beyond your comprehension.

Look, I dont give a flying fxxk what you do with your ear. In fact the less of you the better on future flightsims. You most likely don't even know the difference between Flight and FSX anyway. That's one less whiner and 1 less idiot we have to put up with on SE or Flight, should it be released. Oh, BTW, you agree that Flight is a dead platform? When was the last time MS released anything for it? Right,

Glad you like using a workaround to connect on MP using the box version. Thats really smooth operation.
And don't give me that crap about more session than on Steam. Who cares? How many flippin sessions do you need at one time?

I recognize your complaining attitude from the Steam forums. Keep your precious SDK. We are moving on. Trying to do something positive for the sim community. Please, dont ever show your face on the SE version. Fine with the rest of us.

LoL. Things that blow up like that should go "tick tick tick" louder, so I know to run.

"The box edition is a dead platform from a developers perspective. Period. End of story."
But developers are still supporting MSFSX. New content debuts all the time, and more content is planned. Some of it will support SE, some won't.

Aren't you the guy who was bad-mouthing VATSIM in his OP? I use teamspeak. On FSOpen sessions with my box set, where required. I don't want to fly in a VA. If you were as much my Steam fanboi as you let on you'd see my posts that say I wish more sessions would require passwords so there are more quality sessions to choose from, and not just 4. Why do I need more than 4? i don't want to fly to Princess Juliana, I don't want to fly to Heathrow, I don't want to fly to LAX, and I don't speak german/french/spanish/russian. Where is one single bush flying session, or a helicopter ops session, or some VFR sessions of any nature? Maybe later it'll settle down, and users will all download good catalogs of freeware and common payware and I can use it like I did on GameSPY in the olden days. Maybe not. WTH, it was $5.

"I recognize your complaining attitude from the Steam forums. Keep your precious SDK. We are moving on. Trying to do something positive for the sim community. Please, dont ever show your face on the SE version. Fine with the rest of us."

If you were as big a fanboi as you claim, you'd have read this post:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/314160/di ... 917689040/
Where I said the missing SDK is "minor", offered to build the airport that OP thought he could build if he only had SDK compilers (I REALLY don't think he could, I couldn't without IS3 as I explain), and everyone jumped my goat for daring to suggest that even if they had the missing compilers most Steam users still couldn't build models or edit scenery to effect. Oh, and because I corrected people who said they needed the SDK compilers to do repaints. Then I listed three ways to get the missing compilers if you didn't get them from Steam.

And I'm not planning on deleting SE, and can't say that I ever recall planning to delete SE. I don't fly it a lot, but I do a little. I flew a couple sessions with FoMoCo63, chasing his DC-3 around in Beech 18 and a Turbo Commander. That was pretty fun.

But hey, nice talking to you.
