Steam Edition texture issues

Postby niesenak » Sun Jan 11, 2015 8:39 pm

Hello,
Long time FS modder here (since FS98), and this is not my first FSX copy.
I recently got the FSX Steam Edition ($5!) during the holiday deals, figuring it's a cheap way to upgrade my old base FSX copy.
However, I have installed many aircraft that I verified working in my older version of FSX, for instance the Samdim Tu-114, and they appear in Steam Edition with no textures. I have googled the issue and found nothing definitive for an answer.
What is the difference (I'm guessing in Aircraft.cfg files) between issues that could be causing this, and what is the fix? I'd sure love to have my Tu-114 back. I've been using it since FS2004 and it's still my favorite propliner. If you don't have it, you're missing out.

Thanks guys.

Make sure your dx10 preview is off. Works on mine.

I was one of the bets testers and I discovered the same thing some of the textures are different. Even with the dx10 preview turned off I noticed that my default airport which is KJAX looked differently The grass was a different texture. I am not sure what the reason for this but the difference was not so bad that I would not keep it. It just surprised me. The only thing that I can think of for the reason for this might NOTICE I said MIGHT cause this is Steams servers bandwidth might not handle the actual texture. But like I said This might be the reason and than it might not be.
The One thing I was hoping that would change was the outdated navigation data base and to my knowledge it did not. Some one correct me if I am wrong.

I will hazard a guess here that the bandwidth of steams server has zero effect on the textures didplayed on your own system. The texture files come from your own computer, not steams...

I'm sorry I even got into steam.. ie; textures are not upgradable. for instance I tried to install groundtextures and nothing happened. Also, do you notice when ypou are flying at low alts, the monitor seems like its the same speed as flying 100kts or 300kts. As far as fps, I get more fps using the cd program than I do when I use steam. At least when I use the cd fsx, I can add or delete whatever ground texture I have available. I even tried to use the fsfs extreme and 2013 programs, but they don't work either. Does anyone know how to solve these problems, because Steam dosent have a clue. I have a feeling Steam will be going to the same junkyard as Flight did.

Regarding textures, I've put some of my nice FS 2004/FSX freeware grass textures into my Steam FSX version, and it worked OK.
Once you have got used to the Steam layout of Folders and Files, and where they are situated,..... :? ...., its very similar to the original FSX!

...but I'm mostly using my original CD version now... ;) ....!

wow, my experience couldn't be farther from yours. EVERYTHING I have tried to install to FSX:SE has worked. I have 11 gigs of scenery, and 70 gigs of simobjects, including Carenado, JF, Alabeo, FSD, LHC, ND, MilViz, and Area51 payware, and EVERYTHING WORKS. the textures most assuredly ARE upgradable. You just gotta install them in the correct path. If you use old instructions from a FSX texture upgrade download and install to C:/.../Microsoft Games/FSX, then you aren't installing the correct path.

With Steam my fps are faster and the multiplayer works well (I spotted FoMoCo63's session yesterday). If i had to choose between my disk install and my FSX:SE, I'd probably lose the disk install and keep Steam Edition.

FSX-SE is installed in your computer in similar way as FSX CD. I mean:

The program is installed inside the Steam folder.
The other FSX-SE main folderS are installed in the same places as FSX, so you will see both there:
Scenery in "Program data"
FSX files in User files
And User\appdata, both local and roaming.

The only difference is that FSX-SE needs to be internet connected. Updates are automatic, today there has been one.

As for sceneries my suggestion is to install them outside of the Sim and then you can actívate in FSX, FSX-SE and P3D, no need of installing 3 times.

My SE install decidedly did not like that approach, and would tell me that scenery on line so-and-so wasn't there. The sceneries it told me weren't there WERE displayed, but I got the whole gamut of error messages everytime I activated any scenery. I already had the scenery folder saved to c:\AddOn Scenery, and I used it to reference both FSX and FS9, which had always worked fine. But SE did not like it. So I copied and pasted the old AddOn Scenery folder into the Steam ->FSX folder and activated it from there and FSX-SE seemed to like that better.
