The best place to learn how to set up to fly on VATSIM is from there forums
http://forums.vatsim.net/I used to fly with Vatsim And even tried my hand at controlling I grew tired of it. When you do get online make sure you let them know you are new to this otherwise you will be dropped like a hot rock.
Do not get me wrong Vatsim is a great place to fly on line with live ATC but some controllers think they are the real deal and expect you to be the same which means you better know your lingo and do not ask them to repeat instructions to many times one way to learn is to just listen in.
It is advised to keep a pad and a good pencil or two handy.
