How did I miss this?

Looks like a great project and new way to view the world in FSX

The Tileproxy Project

A realtime interface between Microsoft Flight Simulator X / 2004 and Internet based satellite map servers. Downloads satellite terrain at up to 30cm/pixel as you fly. The latest version adds a static photo scenery for FSX to speed up things!

I'm a fan of TileProxy/FSX. As far as I am concerned it is the best scenery package around - and it's FREE... Unfortunately, the developer, Christian Buchner, is inactive, so you will need to use forums to get answers to questions/installation problems. The last TileProxy release was November 2008. However, people have had good luck getting TileProxy installed and running on Windows 7 and Windows 8. I use Windows 7 with no problems.

TileProxy is semi-complex to install. The best guide to the installation is by Ed Truthan. Here is the link:

You need to read and re-read this guide and follow it - no shortcuts... :>)

Also, there are many good YouTube videos that showoff TileProxy's capabilities. Here are a couple:

A few hints:
1) don't run FSX at more than 25FPS
2) You need a fast PC, fast video card, and high speed internet connection.
2) use Service1 (MS VirtualEarth/Bing maps). The resolution is better than Service3 (Yahoo maps) in most places on earth.
3) use the ProxyUser.ini file contained in the following download. It contains a good set of TileProxy parameters. This is a key TileProxy file.

4) really read Ed Truthan's TileProxy tutorial.

Enjoy,
John

Where has this been hiding at. This is the first I ever herd mention of this program but I am going to check it out for sure.
Thanks Pete and John the videos are awesome and I appreciate the links for the guides as how to install this. My first thought was this might be complicated but I think I can manage to get through it.

I notice that you are running Windows 8. I don't want to discourage you, but I think folks are having a hard time installing TP on Win 8 systems!! I am running Win 7 and have no problems. Here is a link to an AVSIM forum answer for installing TP on a Win 8 system...
http://forum.avsim.net/topic/387919-til ... try2571931

Bear in mind that TilrProxy was developed with Win XP (32 bit), released in Nov. 2008, and Win 8 is a 64 bit operating system. However, TP runs fine on Win 7 (64 bit)???
Good luck,
John
