I flew FSX on a laptop with 1GB RAM 1GHZ processer, had to turn a lot of settings down, but had little lag

It all depends on what you expect if you want what you see in screenshot showcase a lot, you need a gaming rig, but if you don't care about graphics as much, a average laptop will do fine, now that said, when I was offered a PC that had 4x the processing power I jumped right on it...

My computer (listed in the signature) will run FSX with most settings maxed out decently. Prior to this I had an AMD Athlon II (2.8 GHz dual core), 4 GB of ram, and a nVidia 9800GT (1GB) which would run FSX with most settings turned down decently although not great. Although I did not own FS 2004 at any point, FS 2002 would run perfectly on my old computer. (Hope this helps)
